Should Airsoft guns be banned?

Any sport to do with shooting these days is becoming more popular by the day. Unfortunately the word “GUN” makes a lot of people jump, agitated and angry. The Airsoft guns of today are harmless providing safety rules are observed. Airsoft shooting is probably one of the safest and most popular sports enjoyed in the world today. But, still there are some people that think they should be banned.

Airsoft Guns were initially designed in Japan because the real firearms were illegal. Early in the 1990s, the Springer kits became available in the hobby stores. Also in the 1990s, Japan developed gas powered Airsoft guns, which replaced the cheaper plastic Automatic Electric Guns.

There are many ways in which the games of Airsoft and paintball are similar. However, the games really are not the same thing. But do the same people that would like to ban the Airsoft gun also want to ban the paintball gun?

I believe the “disapproval” from the people against the Airsoft gun is that they are to real looking. If someone would walk into a store with an Airsoft Gun and use it for robbery the Clerk behind the counter will not know the difference. If he’s smart he would give the money but if he panics he might pick up the gun behind the counter and shoot out of self defense.

To look at it technically: The robber could have never harmed the Clerk with this Airsoft Gun because of its 6 millimeter plastic Bbs, but still he did not come in to the store and shout “ok listen this is a robbery but this gun is not a real gun”. Thus the Airsoft gun isn’t harmful on its own but can become together with its user.

Airsoft guns are not classified as firearms and are legal under federal law, as well as the laws in each state. However, in some major cities and population centers the definition of a firearm within their respected ordinances includes propulsion by spring or compressed air, thus subject to applicable laws.

A few different states like Michigan allow the purchase of Airsoft guns, but they must have an orange tip on the barrel. New York City requires that all realistic toy or imitation firearm be made of clear or brightly colored plastics.

They still should be banned? Ok fair enough but then should a car as well? This object, in the USA, kills over 115 people each day. But because each person in the United States needs their car for work, shopping and because the oil industry is so important in our economy no one will ever even dream about banning the car even though it’s one of the most dangerous weapons in our society.

Would you rather have your daughter or wife walk outside at night without any self defense, with a real firearm or with an Airsoft Gun? These days it is very unfortunate that we have to carry self defense products with, but like anyone who has ever been in a situation like this knows it’s becoming more and more mandatory each and every day.

And to be fair, with all these rules and regulations to make it safe for society and the fact that Airsoft Guns started off as hobby and was never intended to be used as a “real” weapon it’s still is most commonly used in the sports world and that is where they should stay.

Mazda Hydrogen RE (Hybrid): Commitment to a Greener Earth

In order to contribute to a greener environment, Mazda Motor Corporation developed its well-known Hydrogen Rotary Engine (RE). The Hydrogen RE combines the company’s trademark and original Zoom-Zoom performance, which Mazda calls the ‘emotion of motion.’ Since 2006, Mazda has already been leasing the RX-8 Hydrogen RE to various business corporations and government bodies. This is done in order to exhibit the efficiency of the engine in burning hydrogen as a means of generating motive power while at the same time, emitting zero carbon dioxide.

However, the hydrogen engine with its inherent ‘emotion in motion’ is more than just about clean performance. In fact, the overall dynamic and smooth driving experience is not compromised, because the RX-8 Hydrogen RE also offers an extremely powerful combustion engine that runs in gasoline. The model’s dual-fuel system allows one to conveniently switch between gasoline and hydrogen fuel. The RX-8 Hydrogen RE still boasts of the remarkable features of the initial model RX-8, including a four-seater sports coupe and freestyle doors.

It was in the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show when Mazda first exhibited the new Mazda Hydrogen RE Hybrid. This year, Mazda has commenced its leasing of the hydrogen engine-powered car. It is through the utilization of the improved hybrid system and the refinements to the engine that excellent driving performance can be truly achieved. Some of the key concepts that were incorporated to the engine enhancements involve the following:

• powerful, high-speed, fun driving,

• larger trunk space and higher seating capacity (up to five full-sized adults),

• longer periods of in-between refueling.

Perhaps the main reason why RX-8 Hydrogen RE is one of the most outstanding creations of Mazda is because of the integration of their mission to keep their cars environment-friendly. The materials that were used to further reduce the emission of carbon dioxide were plant-derived. Thus, aside from providing optimum car performance, these materials also exhibit great resistance to shock, heat, and damages caused by fire and extreme weather conditions. RX Hydrogen RE also ensures versatility, as its interior and exterior design (seat covers, audio system) and other various features offer high-quality dynamism for all car enthusiasts.

Up to now, Mazda Motor Corporation is active in developing different technologies that serve as the company’s contribution in achieving a sustainable energy and power plant. Mazda takes part in providing clean performing vehicles that run in alternative fuels like hydrogen, diesel, and gasoline.

For increased acceleration performance, the initial RX-8 Hydrogen RE was further enhanced. A total 40 percent increase in energy generation resulted from the enchanced power unit. This is done by changing the core unit (the main hydrogen RE) to a transverse-style layout. Consequently, the resistance to intake and exhaust, as well as the efficiency of combustion significantly increased, and thus, providing better output for a wide range of engine velocity.

In order to complement the brand new hydrogen RE, a unique hybrid system concept was also developed. This is because the traditional hydrogen RE has poor efficiency of combustion, decreased torque and revolution range, which are all resolved with the new hybrid system. In addition, the system combines higher capacity for hydrogen with a more extensive range for hydrogen fueling—twice more efficient than that of the initial RX-8 Hydrogen RE. Despite these key changes, the vehicle still uses a dual-fuel system; thereby living up to the car’s practicality of use.

Instead of using the conventional combustion power-pump, the engine makes use of an electric motor rack. This is powered by the energy that comes from the combustion of hydrogen into electricity. Through this electric-drive innovation, the hybrid system is able to integrate maximal and efficient energy, quick responsiveness, and reduced consumption of fuel. Indeed, the new hybrid system concept paves the way for a driving pleasure that’s like no other.

Moreover, the most exceptional components of the hybrid system that includes the hydrogen RE, inverter, generator, battery, and electric motor, all works together in fully optimizing car performance. This is done by altering and controlling the way the system generates electricity and how the battery is discharged or recharged. This mechanism of hybrid system monitoring is largely dependent on the driving conditions to which the vehicle is subjected to. For instance, if the car is pulling away after a stop, the system runs on battery power. However, during steady running, the vehicle runs on hydrogen RE and on generator. When accelerating, the vehicle also runs on battery power, along with the hydrogen RE and the generator power. Alternatively, during deceleration, regeneration occurs through the motor when engine braking. The hydrogen RE then stops from being inactive, unless there is a need to recharge the battery.

Just like the initial Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE, the hybrid model also makes use of Mazda Biotechmaterial, which is a collective term for the plant-derived materials, such as biofabric and bioplastic, which the company develops. In order to showcase the best of Mazda technologies that cares for the environment, the company collaborates with various universities, corporations, and also the government bodies in the Hiroshima region. This is part of the company’s participation in the projects launched by government departments concerning Trade, Industry and Economy.

Mazda is the pioneering company which introduced the use of plant-derived bioplastic that exhibits remarkable properties such as resistance to intense shock, wear and tear, heat, and other unfavorable weather conditions. Additionally, the hybrid model of the Mazda Hydrogen RE makes use of these plant-derived materials for its seat covers and interior trimmings.

What’s so great about using such materials—bioplastic and biofabric—is their quality appearance that is not compromised even with their resistance properties. The most probable reason for this is the careful production of these materials and the in-depth research that was conducted prior to their manufacture. In particular, a “compatibilizer” was developed in order to melt flexible components that contribute to improved absorption of shock.

Lastly, Mazda introduced recycling of bumpers as a way to decrease waste on landfills. The company developed a system of collecting damaged bumpers and since March 2005 (when RX-8 made use of recycled bumpers), recycled bumpers has been continually applied on newer models. The hybrid model of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE is not an exception.

Should parents allow kids the use of Airsoft guns?

When your child is writing his wish list for Santa Claus and you read “Airsoft gun”, don’t jump. Air soft guns are harmless providing safety rules are observed. Airsoft shooting is probably one of the safest and most popular sports enjoyed in the world today. Before you agree or disagree and in particular if you consider purchasing anything and especially anything to do with sports and shooting you always should do some background research.

What are Airsoft guns?

Airsoft guns are realistic-looking TOY guns that fire small plastic bullets to ranges of 25 to 45m at speeds of around 75 - 100 meters per second. Airsoft game is a paintball-like team game that's originates from Japan.

But let's give this matter a thought. Forget the air/BB gun you know from when you were a kid. You remember the one that shot out a neighbor’s kitchen window. Maybe someone you know might have already been telling you, it isn’t a BB gun, it's an Airsoft gun. It shoots a light weight (soft) plastic BB. It will not break the neighbors' windows.

In fact, Airsoft guns have been around for almost 30 years. While many of the air guns were used for hunting, Airsoft guns are designed for recreational activities such as paintball.

Types of Airsoft Guns:

There are 3 different types of Airsoft guns available:

Spring operated guns work on mechanical power. For each shot, you need to cock the gun by pulling back the bolt.

Gas powered guns use compressed carbon dioxide to shoot the BB.

The electric Airsoft guns are the most complex guns. They are the most commonly used and widely available type of Airsoft gun. Good for both of experts and beginners, especially for beginners.

Instead of shooting metal pellets of BBs, these guns fire a 6 millimeter plastic BBs’. Combined with the lower barrel velocities, this mean these guns are safer to operate.

But which one should you choose? Some are cheap gas and electric air soft guns from $50 to $200. These guns are for those beginner players that are just starting out. The more experienced players play with markers that cost anywhere from $ 400 to $ 2000 plus.

Accessories:

Like other sports there are lots of different accessories that come with Airsoft Guns: scopes, masks, holsters, slings, chargers, targets, tactical vests, apparel, and more. Also, Airsoft upgrades and modifications, Spring and Gas Airsoft Gun upgrades, external Airsoft Electric Gun (AEG) upgrade, internal Airsoft Electric Gun (AEG) upgrades, mounts, and weaver rails.

Safety:

Now, the question if you should allow your children to use an Airsoft gun?: Well after hundreds of neighborhood Airsoft battles involving a dozen or so kids, there has not been any reported injuries. Unlike football which often can result in a broken thumb or knee, Airsoft has been a very safe activity for children and adults.

You will see these generations of kids were raised on riding helmets and seatbelts just automatically wear protective gear without thinking about it.

All players should be wearing the proper equipment. Everyone should be wearing safety glasses and the proper attire. When using these markets, make sure the safety is on until you are ready to shoot because these markers can go off accidentally, almost like a real gun. Make sure that when you play that these guns are regulation and are allowed to be used where you play.

Observe the law and observe your and other people’s safety at all times.

The Economics of Alexander Michael Gittens

As an author Michael Alexander Gittens is prolific. He has written articles and has done some blogs for small business and consulting websites. His thesis for his doctoral studies in business administration regarded the perceived commercial viability of strategic consulting for micro firm and is still in process. He wrote about the gadgets he bought with economically significant aspects. His business involvements have a long list.

As a young kid Alexander Michael Gittens started honing his business acumen by selling sports card like basketball and baseball to his peers. Making a start at the basement of his parents’ home could say well for this enterprising boy. It did more good when he along with a friend outsourced hockey and football cards for a percentage of profits. Selling ice cream around the neighborhood was no mean feat.

It is reasonable to suppose that his business experience as a young boy is doing well for him today. He easily succeeded in his master's degree in business administration with focus in finance and negotiations. At the same time acted as business advisor for numerous Internet-based companies. Alexander Michael Gittens went on to become CEO and CFO of different stimulating business ventures. To top it all he became a junior board member of the Toronto-based college business school.

Concurrently a student for a doctoral degree in business administration, his research proposal is all about micro-firms and their long term prospects and planning. Still in business, he is doing more research largely in entrepreneurship. Being an entrepreneur himself starting while young makes it possible for him to breeze through his school thesis. The experience of being a strategy consultant for online ventures and micro firms has added to the economics of Alexander Michael Gittens.

Presumably his concern for the economy has made him put much concern for money. With his articles whether it was about going “green” or the article “A thousand things done 1% better” excerpts from the forthcoming book “Survive to Thrive” the economy on a personal or on the national level got to be discussed.

He is the quintessential businessman. He has finished and completed his courses on Canadian Securities and Real Estate. To him learning is never an unending process. There is the thirst and craving for what would make him intellectually robust. This all adds up to his impeccable credential. Attending schools, writing and going on to business himself, he has got the discipline.

Most of his papers deal broadly on entrepreneurship, money concerns, and the economy of a country. The surrounding factors to either accomplish or to advance to another level are boldly discussed. He tends to offer solutions and suggestions for his proposals. He doesn’t live anything hanging on the air. As organized as he is, Alexander Michael Gittens makes sure there are no rough edges.

Design, data and analysis is more like him. No stone unturned. Alexander Michael Gittens sees to the possibilities of things and never gets down over little things undone. Cleveland Indians - About Them

Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team that has been playing in the city since 1869. Known as the Cleveland Spiders in their early years, the team shifted to a new ballpark called League Park in 1891. Louis Sockalexis was the main player of the team at that time. In early years as a franchise, the team’s biggest star was Napoleon Lajoie. To honor him, the Cleveland Indians were also nicknamed as Naps. In 1910, Joe Jackson, another legendary batter, joined the Cleveland roster.

The 1920 Indians were triumphant in most of their matches and the two decades that followed brought some great stars and unforgettable moments. Players like Earl Averill, Mel Harder and Lou Boudreau, a new stadium, and new ownership were some positive changes that came about in the team. The Indians shifted to the new Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1932.

It was in the 1940s that the Indians were bolstered by veterans like Boudreau, Ray Mack and Feller. Then, Bill Veeck purchased the club and ushered the next great era. He put the Indians in Cleveland Municipal Stadium on a full-time basis from 1947. Veeck made some good decisions and signed some good players like Larry Doby, the A.L.'s first African-American player (in 1947) and Satchel Paige. It was because of these efforts that, in 1948, Indians won the World Series.

In the 1950s, the Clevelands had a new management. Frank Lane became the new GM and his hasty decisions gave him the nickname of "Trader Lane." He was followed by Gabe Paul. Through the 1960s and 1970s, the Indians suffered economically and their club changed hands frequently. There were constant rumors of relocating the team as well. In this period, Andre Thornton Thornton who battled injuries and personal tragedy was given a place of honor in the team.

Most of the early 1980 was sparked only by individual accomplishments and hardly any team glory. So Cleveland hosted the 1981 All-Star Game to make a comeback. In 1980s, voting was also carried on for a new ballpark for the team. Finally, the team’s fortunes took an upswing with the curtain call at Cleveland Stadium in 1993.

During the 1990s, the Cleveland Indians transformed themselves into one of the most respected franchises in baseball. Cleveland Indians often play their home games at Terrace club ballpark. Alexander Michael Gittens is an aspiring writer who has capability of sharing thoughts about any subject that might interest readers rather than on subject that interest him alone.

Alexander Michael Gittens initially writes articles, blogs, and creative pieces as a form of stress reliever. His stresses were mostly derived from the fact that he is pursuing Doctoral Degree in Business Administration. To get away from the rigors of studying the field, he puts his thoughts in the computer using his own device. People begin noticing and responding his reflections in his website, and consequently he begin writing regularly. His subjects are mostly focused on the strategies and consultancy for the micro-firms. Nevertheless, he is open to write any topics that his readers want to know from him.

Alexander Michael Gittens is more than just a writer and student in real life. He has several exposures in different fields including music, theaters, speech, sports, and many others. To start with, Alexander Michael Gittens was a piano player. He was first exposed to piano playing in his toddler years when someone gave him toy piano. With constant playing, he eventually started to expose himself to the stage performance even at the young age of ten. His original composition “Tweeleet” was performed by him in the Toronto piano recital. It amused the Toronto audience who credited him a memorable standing ovation. Aside from composing Tweeleet, he also arranged the song Chariots of Fire which was played by encore which also received standing ovation. His other music involvement includes “It is well with my soul” and revision of “How great thou art”. The former song was arranged by him in 1992 and was sang at the regional, provincial and city Youth Conventions, while his version of the latter song won him an award in the next year. His exposure to music has paved his popularity in high school years. He contributed original compositions for the Sears Drama Festival. Sears recognized his work and awarded him for original scoring. He also conducted at the annual concert on their Junior Band by votes from his peers. He also joins in the Jazz Band who played classical songs such as Summertime and Blue Sky. Aside from piano, he also plays the trombone in his young years. At present, Alexander Michael Gittens is a regular pianist at the Durham Board of Education office. Likewise, he is also playing the piano in other social and family events that he participates in.

His exposures and award to music has earned his reputation as a good musical artist. Playing piano is a skill that not all people have, yet are mostly admired. Alexander Michael Gittens, in essence, do not only know how to play piano or trombones. He is also good in composing and arrangement music. This is a good reason why he can be considered as an expert in the field of musical composition. With all these experiences in the fields of music, Alexander Michael Gittens is not only fit to share writings about general business management subjects. He can definitely write articles about pianos and music pieces.

Lewis Hamilton Wins 2008 Monaco Grand Prix

Britain's Lewis Hamilton started this year's Monaco Grand Prix in third position on the grid, behind the two Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, and knew it would take a top drive to get between them, let alone win.

But after last year's Monaco F1, when Lewis finished second when he could have won, nothing it seems was going to stop him - and in the process take the lead in the drivers championship too.

Unusually for Monaco the weather proved challenging, and rain for 20 minutes before and the first ten laps of the 2008 Monaco Grand Prix proved to be a real challenge for every driver on the circuit, and it was lap 20 before the sun really came out and the track dried.

With no traction control this year, the Monaco F1 was even more of a race of driving skill over car performance, and the Ferrari one-two earned in qualifying disappeared immediately from the start as Lewis Hamilton overtook current World Champion Kimi Raikkonen to slip into second place.

The unusually slow pace for the first ten laps still took its toll, with Monaco resident Jensen Button losing a front wing, and fellow Monaco resident David Coulthard crashing out shortly after, and Lewis Hamilton crashed into a barrier with a rear tyre puncture on the sixth lap at Tabac Corner but recovered after a pit stop.

Indeed it could have been the pit stop that helped Lewis to victory, as the McLaren team re-fuelled the car, enabling Lewis Hamilton to carry on with just one more pit stop necessary to the finish.

Other points of note for driver performance were the disappointing drives of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen (involved in no less than four incidents) and Felipe Massa, while on the positive BMW's Robert Kubica had an excellent Monaco Grand Prix to come second, picking up his trophy from Princess Caroline, and Force India's Adrian Sutil who would have come fifth and picked up World Championship points but for Kimi Raikkonen crashing into him just before the final laps.

Hamilton had built up an impressive 30 second plus lead before his final pit stop, allowing him to re-join the race comfortably leading, but the safety car was called out for the second time in the race, leaving Hamilton's lead in shreds.

Of all the Grand Prix, Monaco is the most testing for drivers by far around the streets of Monte Carlo and the best known Monte Carlo hotel the Hotel de Paris, but Hamilton kept a cool head to win, with Prince Albert presenting Lewis with the winners' trophy.

Lewis called in on his radio to the McLaren team on his victory lap that they would party tonight - and with the Pussycats Doll Nicole Scherzinger Lewis' guest for the weekend, it should be a party Monaco will remember!

The final positions for the 2008 Monaco Grand Prix are:

1 Lewis Hamilton (GB) McLaren-Mercedes two hours 0 minutes 42.742 seconds

2 Robert Kubica (Pol) BMW Sauber 3.064 secs behind

3 Felipe Massa (Brz) Ferrari +4.811secs

4 Mark Webber (Aus) Red Bull-Renault +19.295

5 Sebastian Vettel (Ger) Toro Rosso-Ferrari +24.657

6 Rubens Barrichello (Brz) Honda +28.408

7 Kazuki Nakajima (Jpn) Williams-Toyota +30.180

8 Heikki Kovalainen (Fin) McLaren-Mercedes +33.191

9 Kimi Raikkonen (Fin) Ferrari +33.792

10 Fernando Alonso (Spa) Renault one lap behind

11 Jenson Button (GB) Honda one lap

12 Timo Glock (Ger) Toyota one lap

13 Jarno Trulli (Ita) Toyota one lap

14 Nick Heidfeld (Ger) BMW Sauber four laps

R Adrian Sutil (Ger) Force India-Ferrari 67 laps completed

16 Nico Rosberg (Ger) Williams-Toyota 59 laps

17 Nelson Piquet Jr (Brz) Renault 47 laps

18 Giancarlo Fisichella (Ita) Force India-Ferrari 36 laps

19 David Coulthard (GB) Red Bull-Renault seven laps

There’s No Place like Home

Don’t make the mistake of leaving your self defense and martial arts training in your suitcase when you go on vacation!

Peter Barry

A couple of weeks ago there was a story on the news and in the paper that sticks in my mind. It is the story about a group of cruise ship passengers that were held up at gun point while on a land tour. If you are not familiar with the story, The Carnival Lines ship Legend docked in Limon, Costa Rica. A group of 6 passengers booked a private tour. While on the tour, 3 armed assailants attempted to rob them. One of the passengers, a 70 year-old man grabbed one of the attackers

and snapped his neck. OK, so the man was a former Marine. The other passengers began to resist and the attack ended with no one that matters being hurt.

When I first heard about this I thought it was great that none of the passengers were hurt and the man was a hero for taking action. I still think that but, when you look further into the story, the passengers have to accept some responsibility for putting themselves in this situation. The passengers were warned that Limon was a dangerous place and that a passenger on another ship was shot in the stomach a month earlier. Another passenger booked a private tour

but he heeded the crews’ warnings and also hired a body guard. Another passenger, a retired NYPD officer, said “From the moment I stepped off the ship, I knew it was very dangerous,”

“Everyone was eying us all over”. I looked up Limon in the internet and I didn’t see anything worth doing or seeing that was worth risking my life over. Why would you want the added stress of wandering around a dangerous place when you are supposed to be relaxing on vacation? I think staying on the ship and lounging by the pool would have been the wiser choice.

In another incident, a friend of mine was in Madrid visiting his daughter who was spending the semester studying in Spain. Now, Madrid is not at all like Limon. It is a very clean, very friendly city where you feel safe at any hour of the day. My friend was walking through the rail station,

rolling his bag behind him, looking for the place he was meeting his daughter. All of a sudden he was knocked backwards over his luggage and a man stole his wallet from his pants pocket.

I don’t think this was in any way his fault but, he should have been more aware of his surroundings and at least seen the man coming. What can be learned from these two

incidents? Be aware of your surroundings. Whether you are at the mall in your hometown or

on vacation in some third world country, you must be cognizant of what is going on around you.

Just because you are on vacation does not mean the criminals are. It means you will be out of town before the trial (if any) starts. Criminals always choose the weakest target. Wandering through a train station looking lost makes that you.

You are responsible for your own safety. Because Carnival Lines chooses to dock in Limon, doesn’t mean it is a safe place to visit. It probably means it is a cheap place to dock. Be prepared. Pack your pepper spray in your luggage (NOT your carry on) and Across Generations- It’s never too early or late to start your training. Bring your personal alarm for use in the hotel. Believe me, when people are staying in a hotel and hear a strange alarm they come out of their rooms pretty

quickly. I’m not saying you have to go through life being paranoid, just careful. Be safe.

Guide To Golf Club Irons

Golf is a great way to get outside for a few hours a day and if you walk the course and carry your bag it is a great way to get some exercise as well. Before you can get out on the course you need to be sure you get the right equipment and one of the most important sets you will buy is your golf club irons.

There are many things to look for when buying golf club irons and it is always a good idea to buy your first set of golf club irons from a store that has a knowledgeable sales representative available. You may want to consider buying your set of golf club irons from a PGA certified golf pro at a pro shop at your local golf course. PGA stands for the Professional Golfer's Association and a certified PGA Golf Pro will know exactly how to fit you with your first set of golf club irons and then give you the tips you need to know to buy your own golf club irons in the future.

There are two approaches to buying golf club irons. You can buy a complete set or you can buy each club one at a time. The advantage to buying the complete set is that you pay a lot less money for them. The disadvantage is that while you may like the way a couple of the clubs feel the whole set may not be as comfortable for you and you may not get all the clubs you really want.

The advantage to buying clubs one at a time is you get only the clubs you need and you know that every individual club has the right feel for you. The disadvantage is that you will wind up paying a lot more for individual clubs than you would for a set. So figure out if your wallet is more important to you or if you need the best results and then set out to buy your golf club irons.

Knowing the Proper Stance

It is a good idea to take some lessons before buying your first real set of golf club irons. A teacher will show you the proper golf stance and then teach you where the golf club irons fit in that stance. If you don't understand this up front then you could end up purchasing clubs that do not fit into your game and you could find yourself not enjoying the game of golf very much. So take some golf lessons and make sure you pay close attention to the way your instructor tells you to fit the golf club irons into your stance and you will get the maximum results.

After all of that the main thing about buying any golf club is comfort. Make sure the place you are buying your clubs from allows you to swing them to see if they are comfortable or not. Nothing is more important to a golf swing than having comfortable clubs.

Nobel Prize Winners Who Crack Us Up

Stratford, Ontario - The Nobel Prize is awarded each year in October. It is usually a serious and often somber event meant to highlight someone fighting for peace or justice. David Pratt, author of the book ?The Impossible Takes Longer; The 1,000 Wisest Things Ever Said By Nobel Prize Laureates? (Walker & Company, 2007) fills his book with poignant, thought-provoking and emotional quotes. ?But let?s be honest,? he says, ?sometimes the smartest people say or do the dumbest things.?

Like the most recent Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore who said, ?The future will be better tomorrow.? The 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics winner Niels Bohr explained of the horseshoe hanging above his door, ?I certainly do not believe in superstition. But you know, they say it does bring luck even if you don?t believe in it!? Then there is the 1962 Nobel Prize in Medicine winner, James Watson, who collected his prize for his groundbreaking work on DNA and promptly went on to research the all important effects of sunshine on the sex drive.

?These are amazing men and women,? says Pratt. ?They did amazing things. They changed the world. And some of them made us laugh.?

Abdus Salam was the 1979 winner for Physics. He was also Muslim who brought both of his wives to Stockholm for the ceremonies. ?It created quite a stir,? says Pratt. ?Because of protocol there was only one chair.?

Some of the Laureates used laughter to make a point. 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was once leading a peaceful demonstration when nearby soldiers seemed about to fire on the crowd. She continued marching saying, ?We are grateful to those who are giving the people practice in being brave.?

Humorous stupidity isn?t always the Laureates fault. The 1956 Nobel Prize Winner for Medicine, Werner Forssmann, got fired for trying out a medical gizmo on himself. That ?gizmo? turned out to be the first heart catheter. The 1962 Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry was commissioned as part of a secret war project to make ice strong enough for a plane to land on it. Max Perutz?s invention was unveiled to the top brass and an over-eager colonel pulled out his sidearm to see if the bullets would penetrate the super-hard ice. ?They didn?t. Three of the generals were wounded by the ricochets.?

Behind every brilliant man there is a wife fretting he?s stupid without her guidance. Such was the case with Dr. Barry Marshall. ?He was so convinced bacteria caused ulcers he drank a batch of it. He was right, he got sick. His wife was furious, but Marshall went on to win the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1995.?

Among the 1,000 inspirational, poignant and uplifting quotes in Pratt?s book is that of Werner Heisenberg, the inventor of the Uncertainty Principle in quantum mechanics. The epitaph he composed for his tombstone reads, ?He lies here, somewhere.?

?These are brilliant people,? says Pratt. ?I admire them all. The 1975 Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry once played chess blindfolded against 12 players simultaneously and won 8 games.? He doesn?t want anyone to lose sight of the Laureates? accomplishments, ?The prize is intended to point the world?s attention to an issue. It?s intended to protect the person brave enough to stand up for peace and justice. These are great human beings and if laughter points our attention at them so that we can learn from their brilliance then that?s a prize we can give to ourselves.?

David Pratt was born in England in 1939. He attended Oxford University, Harvard University, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. Understanding The Strike Zone

As a young high school pitcher I learned a valuable truth; the major league strike zone isn't exactly the same as it is at the high school level. It seems strange but it's true. If a young player watches a lot of major league baseball on television it can fill their head with confusion when they try to understand what a little league umpire's interpretation of the strike zone is. In this article, we will go through what the strike zone is and how it can be handled at every age.

The Rule as stated in the Rule Book in 1988

"The Strike Zone is that area over home plate the upper limit of which is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the shoulders and the top of the uniform pants, and the lower level is aline at the top of the knees. The Strike Zone shall be determined from the batter's stance as the batter is prepared to swing at a pitched ball." In 1996, the rule was changed to say that the knees had been adjusted to include the bottom of the knee.

Does that make sense to you? How many baseball games have you watched where the pitch was a little bit above the belt and it was called high? It happened all the time for me. When I was growing up, Rickey Henderson had the greatest crouch in baseball. Rickey's job as the leadoff hitter was to get on base and he knew the strike zone very well. He played on the portion of the rule which talks about the stance of the batter. Richie Sexson of the Mariners, on the other hand, is 6 foot 8 inches tall and his strike zone is monstrous so it's no wonder why shorter players like Joe Morgan and expert "crouchers" like Henderson had such high on-base percentages. They had smaller strike zones and were great at utilizing that advantage.

Little League

I tell players in little league that if the ball goes over the plate from your shoulders down the ump will call it a strike. The purpose of little league is to gain confidence playing the game not walking around the bases. Most young pitchers struggle throwing strikes so the umps usually give them the benefit of the doubt. Train to recognize which pitches are outside and inside, but if the ball is set to cross the plate from the shoulders down, swing away!

High School

The same rule applies in high school baseball with a slight variation. I played high school baseball in Iowa and I loved it there. We had great umpires who used their jobs to teach kids instead of just rule over them. Before each game the ump, if asked, would clearly explain what he would call a strike and what he wouldn't. I enjoyed that level of communication as a young pitcher. That way it was my job to pitch to what he would call and not try to adjust otherwise. Typically, high school is just a little more liberal than the pro game. The umps are not as experienced with seeing certain pitches and certain breaks on balls. They will typically call pitches more liberally on the corners as well as high or low. The ump will typically not squeeze you in high school ball. If you are consistently close on your pitches, he will call strikes for you. As a hitter, take the time to talk with an ump before the game and find out what he typically calls a strike. Don't argue about it; just learn where the strikes will be so you know what to expect. If the ump refuses to tell you where the strikes will be, be disciplined and watch the calls as the game progresses.

Dyslexia and Bingo

I have always found bingo as silly game that old women play because they have nothing better to do before they go senile, however I was wrong.

Two years ago I was diagnosed as being seriously dyslexic, which I found a little annoying that when at school I was deemed to be either thick or lazy, and rather than finding out why I struggled they just threw me in the idiot classes. So finding out at this late stage that I was dyslexic and I had serious tracking and focusing problems, so maybe those A?s I got for science and Maths weren?t just the fluke my teachers made it out to be!

Anyway, the dyslexia specialist that diagnosed me, told me about my condition and what I would struggle with and how I can help myself with this. He told me about the software I could use to proof read my work and how using different coloured screens could help me focus on a page and then he told me about training my brain, I instantly thought of ?Dr Kawashima's Brain Training? but the next thing he said shocked me.

BINGO, he told me that bingo was an effective way to stimulate the areas of my brain that struggled, such as the part that deals with short term memory. This all came as a shock to me as the annoying number game I had made assumptions about wasn?t what old people played before they came senile; it?s what they play to help prevent them becoming senile.

Therefore after days of contemplation I decided to brave online bingo for the first time, was an interesting experience and I could believe how hard I found it to keep track of the numbers being reeled out constantly. After I was done playing I was ten pounds up which was a nice surprise and had a bit of a headache.

--

Well that was 2 years ago and I still do my weekly bingo exercises, I find it easier to focus and my short term memory has improved remarkable! If you?re dyslexic I highly recommend trying internet bingo or even just regular bingo hall bingo! It can?t hurt, plus you might win!

Learn Digital Photography Now .. Buying a new digital camera

When it comes time to purchase a new digital camera you might feel a bit overwhelmed. With technology constantly changing and new features available every month it is easy to be confused about what to purchase. However, there is a way to ensure that you purchase the right camera that will meet your needs. The key is to understand the terms and technology. You might not understand all of it, however it is our goal to give you enough information to make an informed decision. This article covers the features of digital cameras that are most important for you to understand.

To begin with me will discuss the similarities between film and digital cameras. Basically a camera is a light airtight box that allows exposure of a light-sensitive material through the use of a shutter and an aperture. This process is the same with either a digital or film camera.

Both film and digital cameras have lenses, which allows you to focus the image and control how the photograph will look (wide or telephoto). The lens is also one of the most important factors in determining overall quality of the image. The better your lens quality, the sharper and more clear your image will appear. Regardless if you are using film or digital photography - poor lenses = poor image quality.

Both types of cameras use Shutters to control the duration of the exposure. Both film and digital cameras need an Aperture to control how much light hits the sensor during the period that the shutter is open. Very large apertures (2.8 or 4) will let in a lot of light, while small apertures (16 or 22) will let in very little light.

Whatever type of camera you may use, Focusing will always be a necessary step in creating sharp photographs. Manual and auto focusing can be found on both types of cameras.

Film Advance, Lag and Response Time The digital sensor takes in light much like film. Once the light strikes film it becomes"exposed" and the camera must advance the film to the next film frame to carry on the development. With digital cameras, the information that was acquired during exposure is moved on to the processor and the sensor is then freed up to grab another image. The length of time it takes for the sensor to "unload" its information and be ready to record again is called Advance Time. The speed of the digital camera is also influenced by how many images it can retain in the memory before the camera needs a time out to process them. A typical statistic could be "23 full-res(resolution) JPEGs or 6 RAW images at 5 fps"(Canon 20D). All this means is that the camera will shoot 5 frames per second until the memory fills up. The memory will become full at 6 exposures if you are shooting RAW and 23 if you are shooting the highest quality JPEG.

Something called Lag Time was a major issue when digital cameras first became popular. The "lag", or amount of time, in between the time you pressed the shutter and the time the shutter opened was very noticeable. Fortunately with recent advances in technology lag time has reduced significantly. Today even most of the budget friendly cameras have a very quick turn around time in between shots or during a series of quick exposures. To sum it up, if your photography requires fast shooting (i.e. sports photography) and requires many frames per second, it would be a good idea to do some research and check out the frames per second and lag time statistics before purchasing a camera.

When digital cameras first became popular, something called Lag Time was a major issue. The "lag" in between the time you pressed the shutter and the time the shutter opened was very noticeable. Recent advances in technology have reduced lag time significantly. Even most low priced cameras, have a very quick turn around time in between shots or during a series of quick exposures. If your photography requires fast shooting and many frames per second, it would be a good idea to check out the frames per second and lag time statistics before purchasing.

In Digital Photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography - the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds (for example an indoor sports event when you want to freeze the action in lower light) - however the cost is noisier shots.

This increased sensitivity does have its drawbacks however. With film you get an excess of grain, with digital you get what is called noise. The grain of film, in most cases is considered acceptable and in some cases even desired. Noise, however does not have the same allure. Unlike different emulsions of film, the sensor really only has one sensitivity. To manage an increased ISO, or during very long exposures, the camera must send more power to the sensor, which results in the appearance of small specks or dots of white or color. A blotchy look can also be created from the higher ISO's or long exposures. Most of the noise will generally manifest itself in the darker areas of your image. This is an important point to pay attention to if your photography requires higher ISO settings, nighttime or long exposures. In higher end cameras, manufacturers have spent the money to reduce the noise problem, but it still may present itself on the lower cost models. Look to reviews for how much noise individual cameras will produce.

Resolution Probably the least understood and most talked about feature of digital cameras. The more the better, right? Well, most of the time. More resolution doesn't always mean better photographs.

These days almost all digital cameras have very high resolutions. Even the less expensive cameras all come with resolutions sufficient enough to make good 8x10-11x14 prints. So what is the big attraction to higher resolutions? Mostly, it is a selling point for the manufacturers! More resolution is good but what is even better, however, is a larger sensor size. The bigger the better. This is a much better measure of the camera's final image quality. In film cameras, a 35mm is better than an APS camera because the size of the image on the film is bigger. No different with digital cameras.

White Balance White balance refers to the processors ability to create "correct" color in your pictures. The digital camera sensor always captures "raw" information and then the camera processor processes it and sends it to the memory card.

Choose a digital camera that is right for you Understanding how the sensor works allows us to make some intelligent decisions surrounding resolution and camera speed. White balance is a fairly uniform feature across the entire line of cameras, negating any serious consideration in this arena. So what other features exist that may influence your camera purchase?

Buying a new digital camera

Focal length is the next consideration you should think of before purchasing a digital camera. Do you like to shoot with wide-angle lenses? Long telephoto lenses? Do you enjoy shooting up close with macro lenses? Digital cameras have all the same lens options that your film camera does. It is simply a matter of choosing the camera with the qualities that you want. By looking through magazines or surfing on to the web and going to www.dpreview.com you can easily find the specifications that describe all of the options.

Two sets of specs are commonly given when you begin to look into focal length . The first set is generally the actual focal length of the lens. For example, 7mm-28mm. This example would be an extreme wide angle on a film camera. The digital camera however, has a smaller sensor area than the film camera which makes the 7mm lens look more like a 35mm lens. So the second set of numbers on this lens would be 35mm-136mm. This is typically considered the 35mm equivalent. It is these numbers you should pay attention to when researching different cameras for focal range as they will be more recognizable to you.

Most amateur digital cameras do not provide real wide angle lens choices. They will commonly go down to 35mm or even 28mm but rarely can you find a 24mm or wider. This is mainly due to the difficulties in building such a small focal length lenses. So if you enjoy wide angle photography you many want to think about moving up to a digital SLR.

When it comes to long telephoto lenses the digital cameras have a big advantage to film cameras! Their smaller sensor size turns even moderate telephotos into very long lenses. For example a real 57mm focal length behaves like a 370mm! This is a real advantage to people who like to shoot "long". Please note, beware of cameras which claim their longest focal length as Digital Zoom. You should always avoid Digital Zoom. For these purposes we are concerned only with real or actual focal lengths.

Focusing distance is the last lens specification to consider. If you desire to shoot macro, please look for a lens that focuses very close. They will usually be signified by a "macro mode" or be called "close focusing".

Shooting your digital camera in the field Taking photographs should be the fun part. It is important to not let all of the bells and whistles confuse you when you are out in the field. I agree that there are many choices and they can be a bit overwhelming. Here are three of the most important things you should always check before you start photographing.

ISO- Keep it set to a low (100 or 50) if you are outdoors or in areas where you have plenty of light. Raise your ISO only when you need to keep from getting camera shake. Most digital cameras provide great images all the way up to 400 ISO. If you need to go higher than 400 ISO, you may run the risk of introducing a noticeable amount of noise to your photos. Experiment with your digital camera to determine which ISO produces unacceptable noise levels.

Jpeg vs. Raw- This is an easy choice. If you want to manipulate every photograph in your computer, shoot RAW. This format is much more flexible and enables you to correct errors in exposure and color cast without downgrading the quality of your image. If you do not have the time or desire to work on every image, then use the highest quality Jpeg mode. Jpeg mode uses a minimum amount of image compression and provides extremely high quality pictures.

Image Size- Most cameras come with multiple resolution choices. Your choices may look like this: 2304x1728, 1600x1200, 1280x960, 640x480. The rule of thumb is to always choose the highest resolution. In this case that would be 2304x1728. The highest resolution will supply you with the highest quality images possible.

Digital Camera Accessories There are nearly as many accessories for digital cameras as there are digital cameras. There are loads of options available: cases, cards and storage units. Don't open your wallet just yet, there are only a very few accessories that are considered absolute necessities.

Compact Flash-The first accessory is the type of storage medium that your camera uses to store your photographs. I prefer cameras that use Compact Flash as I have found this medium to be the best all around Flash Card. Compact Flash cards are sturdy, durable, not too small to lose or to big to be bulky. They also come in very large capacities-up to 8 gigabytes! Personally I recommend that people should have at least two cards in case one card becomes damaged or lost. How much you want to spend will determine your total amount of storage (cameras rarely ship with a card that is adequate for most photographic purposes). Having two 512Mb cards might be enough for most shooting situations, unless you take loads of photographs. Having 4 of these cards or two 1 GB cards will ensure that you will never be without storage.

Portable Storage-If you have invested in enough Flash Card storage, you will probably not need a portable storage unit. This is however contingent on downloading your cards on a daily basis. If you are in a situation where you will not have access to your computer for long periods of time (in order to upload your photos from your camera to your computer) you may want to consider a portable storage unit. The idea of a Portable Storage unit is to move your photos from your Flash Card to the storage unit thereby freeing up space on the card. You can then put the card back into your camera, reformat it, and continue taking pictures. When you return home you simply attach the storage unit to your computer and transfer the images to your computers harddrive. Most Portable Storage units come with enough space for many days of shooting. A recommendation would be to purchase a unit with at least 10Gb of storage.

Storage and transfer are the most basic functions which all of the models will perform. At this point they can get really fancy. There are units that will automatically create Cds from your cards, which produces an immediate archive of your images. Others come with an LCD screen that allows you to preview your photos right on the storage device. Advanced features will even allow you to organize your images into folders and albums. Prior to purchasing one of these units you may want to think about the length of time you will be away from your computer as you may not need one with these advanced features.

Extra Batteries / Charger Digital cameras run through batteries at an alarming rate. A definite purchase would be back up batteries. In this instance, rechargeable batteries are the intelligent choice because you will be using so many. Also, most digital cameras now come with a proprietary lithium battery with a charger. This is a good thing as it allows a stronger battery however you still would want a back up battery so you can continue to use your camera while one is charging. If this is your situation, purchase extra batteries when you buy your camera. If your camera is powered by common AA batteries, you would be wise to buy a couple sets of rechargeable batteries and a charger.

Bulb blower- a must if you are considering an interchangeable lens SLR. When you change lens on these cameras you will introduce dust into the body. Ultimately this will migrate to your sensor and manifest itself as small blurry splotches on your final image. A few seconds with the blower bulb will save you hours on the computer cleaning up your photographs!

How Are The Pros Going To Handle Torrey Pines At The 2008 U.S. Open

During recent years, you could speculate on who was going to win the USGA’s U.S. Open. Many variables would need to be considered. But when it all comes down to it, one name jumps out. That would be Tiger Woods, of course.

With Tiger recovering from knee surgery, this year’s picks might be a little more difficult. Who can handle the pressure of our national championship? Who has the game to conquer Torrey Pines’ difficult terrain? It will take an all around game to determine this year’s winner.

First off, driving accuracy is of the utmost importance at any U.S. Open venue. We all know how Phil Mickelson fared in 2006. One player that has a distict advantage would be Sergio Garcia. His skills with the driver were never more apparent than with his victory at the Players. Ernie Els and Retief Goosen are also fairly decent drivers. Ernie has struggled lately, but he always seems to step up to the plate at our national championship.

Another factor will be the rough. If the rough is escapable, some of the weaker players may go for shots that they wouldn’t otherwise try. That could play havoc with their scoring.

Putting: the one factor that always brings the best players to the top of the leaderboard. If the USGA sets up Torrey Pines for the 2008 Open like it has in past years, the player that can keep his cool on the greens stands a great chance of winning. Four to five foot putts will not mean gimmies, even to the best putters in the world. If Tiger can get his putting going, after being off for the past few months, there may not be any competition. He is the world’s best putter, no doubt.

The Scramble Factor. There is no telling right now exactly how important it’s going to be for the players to be able to get the ball up and down. If Torrey Pines plays anything like Shinnecock did a few years back, it might just be survival of the fittest. Or best at scrambling. Everyone knows that Woods is great around the greens, but is his lack of playing time going to hurt him in that area. Sergio, Phil, Retief and other top ten players all have excellent short games.

The Pressure Cooker: final day rounds in the U.S. Open have often determined winners or losers. Many of the top players in the world have succumbed under the heat of battle during the final round. How a player performs on Sunday is most likely going to be the determining factor on if he takes home the trophy or not.

Family Thanksgiving Activities

If you're hosting a family thanksgiving, you want to create a fun family environment that helps children understand the importance of thankfulness and reminds the adults of this as well.

Since Thanksgiving comes just before what many refer to as the "greedy" season, activities designed to remind people of the bounty in their lives are useful. For example, you might help children understand that while they don't have everything they want, they do have everything they need.

How do you do this? Several ways. One is to help children create a cornucopia, which will sit on the Thanksgiving table. There are a variety of ways to do this. You can make a papier-mâché cornucopia using a balloon as the base to help you get the shape started. You can simply take large piece of poster board and shape them into a cone and fill those with whatever you like. As an extra activity, you can have the children decorate the cornucopia before it gets filled.

Since the idea of the cornucopia is to celebrate a bounty and appreciate that bounty, you can fill it as is traditionally done with squash, corn and the like. You might also ask each member of the family to bring something that represents their personal bounty in life. A new mom might bring a baby blanket to put in the cornucopia while a newly retired grandpa might add a picture of his family, since that's what's most important to him. You can discuss the items in the cornucopia basket at the dinner table while enjoying your Thanksgiving feast.

Another family activity that kids like is the thankfulness jar. When each person arrives at dinner, they place a note with something they are thankful for in the jar. Ideally, each person will add more than one item to the jar. At dinner, someone (ideally, the matriarch of patriarch of the family) reads the notes. Everyone tries to figure out who wrote which note. The items can range from the serious (someone who struggled with an illness in the previous year might be thankful for life, quite simply) to the silly (the new mom might be thankful there's a Starbucks within 5 minutes of her home). Kids enjoy adding their own touches to the thankfulness jar and their responses are often a surprise to the adult family members.

Some families have several tables set about at Thanksgiving. Many people buy professional floral arrangements to decorate the tables. You can make a game out of it to figure out who's going to get to bring home the table arrangement to their home. You can do the old wedding thing and simply put a number on the bottom of the centerpiece and have someone's chair match that number or you can make a game and perhaps create a trivia game out of Thanksgiving facts. For example, questions might look like this:

*How many turkeys are cooked on Thanksgiving throughout the US?

*Why are turkeys called turkeys?

*Which president set aside the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving?

Be sure you research and know the answers and then quiz everyone. This is a great way to pass the time while everyone is waiting for the feast to be ready. Just tell the winners they can't take the centerpieces until dinner is over!

You can have a similar game before dessert. Create a family trivia game and quiz family members before dessert. Only the people who get the answers right get to have their dessert. Everyone else has to keep trying until they get their trivia question right. Questions can range from the silly to the sublime. They might look something like this:

*Who got popcorn stuck in her braces at 12?

*Which man here wore boots with big holes in them until he was 20 and could buy his own?

*Whose grandparents immigrated to the US from Ireland?

*Which boy here got suspended from school for riding his bike into the classroom?

Grip, Footwork, And Strokes In Tennis

Footwork is weight control. It is correct body position for strokes, and out of it all strokes should grow. In explaining the various forms of stroke and footwork I am writing as a right-hand player. Left-handers should simply reverse the feet. Racquet grip is a very essential part of stroke, because a faulty grip will ruin the finest serving. It is a natural grip for a top forehand drive. It is inherently weak for the backhand, as the only natural shot is a chop stroke.

To acquire the forehand grip, hold the racquet with the edge of the frame towards the ground and the face perpendicular, the handle towards the body, and "shake hands" with it, just as if you were greeting a friend. The handle settled comfortably and naturally into the hand, the line of the arm, hand, and racquet are one. The swing brings the racquet head on a line with the arm, and the whole racquet is merely an extension of it.

The backhand grip is a quarter circle turn of hand on the handle, bringing the hand on top of the handle and the knuckles directly up. The shot travels ACROSS the wrist. This is the best basis for a grip. I do not advocate learning this grip exactly, but model your natural grip as closely as possible on these lines without sacrificing your own comfort or individuality. Having once settled the racquet in the hand, the next question is the position of the body and the order of developing strokes.

All tennis strokes, should be made with the body' at right angles to the net, with the shoulders lined up parallel to the line of flight of the ball. The weight should always travel forward. It should pass from the back foot to the front foot at the moment of striking the ball. Never allow the weight to be going away from the stroke. It is weight that determines the "pace" of a stroke; swing that, decides the "speed."

Let me explain the definitions of "speed" and "pace." "Speed" is the actual rate with which a ball travels through the air. "Pace" is the momentum with which it comes off the ground. Pace is weight. It is the "sting" the ball carries when it comes off the ground, giving the inexperienced or unsuspecting player a shock of force which the stroke in no way showed. A great many players have both "speed" and "pace." Some shots may carry both.

The order of learning strokes should be:

1. The Drive. Fore and backhand. This is the foundation of all tennis, for you cannot build up a net attack unless you have the ground stroke to open the way. Nor can you meet a net attack successfully unless you can drive, as that is the only successful passing shot.

2. The Service.

3. The Volley and Overhead Smash.

4. The Chop or Half Volley and other incidental and ornamental strokes.

Who's Hot: LeBron James' Mother

LeBron James' Mother

(for more on LeBron James Mother, see Site605)

What Happened: LeBron James' mother, Gloria, argued with Boston Celtics players Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett after her son, Lebron James, and Pierce fell into the nearby audience during the fourth game of the playoffs in Cleveland. "Even though that's my mother, the commissioner doesn't care if it's your mother or your kids or anybody, you can't allow fans and players to get involved like that," he said. "And I can't afford for my mom not to be at every last one of my games." James said, "I told her to sit down with some language I shouldn't have used. Thank God today wasn't Mother's Day, it was yesterday." LeBron said he was worred his mother would get in trouble with the NBA.

Commentary Exhibit A: For LeBron, each ballgame is a nail-biter. His mother must react every time he sticks his fingers in his mouth.

Commentary- Exhibit B: We doubt she did enough to deserve a response out of David Stern. Maybe she would if James didn't tell her to "Sit your (butt) down!

Flashback- Jan 06: LeBron James' mother was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Gloria James was pulled over by police, who were working security for the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, said Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards. Gloria James almost hit the police car with her Cadillac, police said. The officers said the 37-year-old James smelled of alcohol and she appeared to be disoriented, Edwards said. Apparently, Gloria James struggled with police as they attempted to put handcuffs on her. They put her in the back seat of the housing authority car where she yelled obscenities at the officers, Edwards said.

James was taken to a police station. There, she turned away breath and sobriety tests. Afterwards, she paid a $2500 bond and was released after being charged with reckless operation, speeding for driving nearly double the speed limit, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, disorderly conduct and damaging police equipment.

Chop, Half Volley, And Court Position

Chop stroke.

------------

In Tennis, a chop stroke is a shot where the angle towards the player and behind the racquet, made by the line of flight of the ball, and the racquet travelling down across it, is greater than 45 degrees and may be 90 degrees. The racquet face passes slightly outside the ball and down the side, chopping it, as a man chops wood. The spin and curve is from right to left. It is made with a stiff wrist. The slice shot merely reduced the angle mentioned from 45 degrees down to a very small one. The racquet face passes either inside or outside the ball, according to direction desired, while the stroke is mainly a wrist twist or slap. This slap imparts a decided skidding break to the ball, while a chop "drags" the ball off the ground without break.

The rules of footwork for both these shots should be the same as the drive, but because both are made with a short swing and more wrist play, without the need of weight, the rules of footwork may be more safely discarded and body position not so carefully considered. Both these shots are essentially defensive, and are labour-saving devices when your opponent is on the baseline. A chop or slice is very hard to drive, and will break up any driving game. It is not a shot to use against a volley, as it is too slow to pass and too high to cause any worry. It should be used to drop short, soft shots at the feet of the net man as he comes in. Do not strive to pass a net man with a chop or slice, except through a big opening.

The drop-shot is a very soft, sharply-angled chop stroke, played wholly with the wrist. It should drop within 3 to 5 feet of the net to be of any use. The racquet face passes around the outside of the ball and under it with a distinct "wrist turn." Do not swing the racquet from the shoulder in making a drop shot. The drop shot has no relation to a stop-volley. The drop shot is all wrist. The stop-volley has no wrist at all.

Use all your wrist shots, chop, slice, and drop, merely as an auxilliary to your orthodox game. They are intended to upset your opponent's game through the varied spin on the ball.

The half volley.

----------------

This shot requires more perfect timing, eyesight, and racquet work than any other, since its margin of safety is smallest and its manifold chances of mishaps numberless.

It is a pick-up. The ball meets the ground and racquet face at nearly the same moment, the ball bouncing off the ground, on the strings. This shot is a stiff-wrist, short swing, like a volley with no follow through. The racquet face travels along the ground with a slight tilt over the ball and towards the net, thus holding the ball low; the shot, like all others in tennis, should travel across the racquet face, along the short strings. The racquet face should always be slightly outside the ball.

The half volley is essentially a defensive stroke, since it should only be made as a last resort, when caught out of position by your opponent's shot. It is a desperate attempt to extricate yourself from a dangerous position without retreating. never deliberately half volley.

Court position.

---------------

A tennis court is 39 feet long from baseline to net. There are only two places in a tennis court that a tennis player should be to await the ball. 1. About 3 feet behind the baseline near the middle of the court, or

2. About 6 to 8 feet back from the net and almost opposite the ball.

The first is the place for all baseline players. The second is the net position.

If you are drawn out of these positions by a shot which you must return, do not remain at the point where you struck the ball, but attain one of the two positions mentioned as rapidly as possible. The distance from the baseline to about 10, feet from the net may be considered as "no-man's-land" or "the blank." Never linger there, since a deep shot will catch you at your feet. After making your shot from the blank, as you must often do, retreat behind the baseline to await the return, so you may again come forward to meet the ball. If you are drawn in short and cannot retreat safely, continue all the way to the net position.

Never stand and watch your shot, for to do so simply means you are out of position for your next stroke. Strive to attain a position so that you always arrive at the spot the ball is going to before it actually arrives. Do your hard running while the ball is in the air, so you will not be hurried in your stroke after it bounces.

It is in learning to do this that natural anticipation plays a big role. Some players instinctively know where the next return is going and take position accordingly, while others will never sense it. It is to the latter class that I urge court position, and recommend always coming in from behind the baseline to meet the ball, since it is much easier to run forward than back.

Should you be caught at the net, with a short shot to your opponent, do not stand still and let him pass you at will, as he can easily do. Pick out the side where you think he will hit, and jump to, it suddenly as he swings. If you guess right, you win the point. If you are wrong, you are no worse off, since he would have beaten you anyway with his shot.

Your position should always strive to be such that you can cover the greatest possible area of court without sacrificing safety, since the straight shot is the surest, most dangerous, and must be covered. It is merely a question of how much more court than that immediately in front of the ball may be guarded.

A well-grounded knowledge of court position saves many points, to say nothing of much breath expended in long runs after hopeless shots.

Coaching Tennis

For those who are interested in a more individualized sport, tennis is one of the popular options. This particular game is built to show strength, durability, and grace all at the same time. If you are looking at the possibilities for participating in tennis, you can begin by understanding the basics of the game.

Tennis is not a game that was invented at any recent time. In fact, the game has been traced back to the ancient Greeks and was played casually among several cultures for centuries. By the year 1874, the name tennis was patented and became a standard game around the world. It first became popular in French, then spread to Portugal and England, eventually moving to a world wide known game.

Tennis begins in a court that is about seventy-eight feet long and twenty-seven feet wide. It will either be made of grass, clay, or concrete, depending on the texture that is needed for the game. One player will be on each side of the court with a net stretched all the way across the middle in order to divide them. One of the players will begin by serving the ball and the other player will be designated to receive the ball.

The objective of tennis is to get the most points by getting the opponent to miss the ball. If they are not able to hit the ball back over the net with a racket, then it is a point for the other side. If the ball bounces more than once, if it goes out of bounds, hits the net on the way back or is missed, then the opposing side will gain a point. Usually, there will be five sets in a tennis match, all which will be added together with the points that are made by each side striking the other out.

If you are looking into the game of tennis, this is where to begin. The basics of the game allow one to see what the main objective and goal is in order to win. By doing this, one will have the ability to take their playing abilities to the court.

Photography For Beginners: Tips For Black And White Photography.

Black and white photograhy is a field of artistic photography that holds a fascination for many people, photographer and viewer alike. If done well, black and white photography can evoke an atmosphere, or create a sense of character in a subject that may not be so well captured in a colour photograph.

For many digital photographers, black and white photogaphy is nothing more than colour photography converted by software. It is a matter for your own judgement whether this is effective for your photographs. Often the image you assume will convert beautifully to black and white will prove a disappointment; sometimes a photo you never imagined will surprise you.

However, most serious photographers will tell you that the best black and white photos are taken when the photographer deliberately sets out with black and white images in mind. This creates an entirely different mindset in terms of how you choose and approach your subject. You may, for example, start to see potential in subjects you would never normally consider for colour photography.

If you have never had a serious go at black and white photography, here are a few simple tips to help you get started.

Black And White Photography Tip #1. Choosing A Subject. Some subjects lend themselves to colour but are not nearly so effective in black and white. For example, sunset photographs rely on the colour of a great sky for their impact, and rarely produce a good black and white image. Colourful birds, flowers, fashion...there are many times when the only logical approach is to shoot your subject in colour. On the other hand, some subjects are ideally suited to black and white photography.

Because this is an 'old-fashioned' medium, it often works well with old-fashioned subjects. Rustic items like old farm equipment, a tumble-down shack, an old wooden fence can all be great subjects for black and white photos.

When photographing people, age can also be a factor. A close-up portrait of an aged face showing all the lines and creases of their years on earth can have much greater impact in black and white.

This can only be a short article, so these examples are just the tip of the iceberg. You will find many great subject once you start thinking in black and white.

Black And White Photography Tip #2. 'Seeing' Your Subject In Black And White. When you first approach your subject, you need to imagine how it will look without colour. Try to look at it in terms of lines and shapes, shadows and contrasts. You will begin to see your subjects in a whole new light. You may even find yourself zooming in on a particular feature, or photographing the subject from an angle you might never have considered in the past. One thing is for sure; once you get into the 'black and white headspace' your camera will express the character of the subject in an entirely different way.

Black And White Photography Tip #3. Use The Light To Enhance Impact. Because a black and white photo relies so much on shadows to define shapes and details, your approach to lighting can make or break an image. As a nature photographer, I often photograph black and white photos quite differently from colour photos.

You have probably heard the rule that the best landscape photography is done early or late in the day when the sun is low and the light is soft and even. Well, in black and white photography I often look for just the opposite. To create better definition in a subect I will often take my photos through the middle part of the day, to create heavier shadows to emphasise the lines and shapes in the composition. I am also more inclined to take photos looking directly toward the sun, to produce silhouettes that make the most of trees, windmills and other strong shapes against the sky.

Earlier I mentioned a portrait of a very old person. If it is the lines on a face that give the image its character, you need to make sure the lighting is from an angle that produces shadows in the creases. Thus you may be looking for lighting in a black and white photograph that would be considered unflattering and unsuitable for a colour photograph.

So there you have three very simple tips for black and white photography. Notice that they are all about the creative approach, not about settings and camera techniques. In fact most of the time, black and white requires no different technical expertise than colour photography. To take better black and white photographs, you don't necessarily need to change the way you use your camera. Instead, you are looking to change the way you see the subject, and how you can use light, shade and composition to capture the character that black and white photography has to offer.

If you love photography and want to stretch your horizons, I am sure you will enjoy experimenting with black and white. It may open your eyes to aspects of your world that have never turned you on before. Good luck and happy snapping!

Getting Started In Trout Fishing

Whether using standard baits or flyfishing, trout fishing offers a wonderful and rewarding past-time for everyone interested in angling or are wanting a fantastic outdoor trip. Trout are believed to be a native Northern America, Asia and Europe, and are actually in the salmon family, which makes them so abundant around the area. On top of that,, there are also all kinds of different species of trout, like brown, cutthroat, rainbow and steelhead. They enjoy the chance to feed on bugs, salmon eggs and smaller fish.

When trout fishing a trout can often be located by its normal habitat. Trout are normally found in skinny lakes or streams and rivers. Additionally, some species of trout make their home in lazy moving streams. Rainbow trout, although, live in faster moving bodies of water. Usually trout like to suspend in places where there are big objects, like a large stone or plant, that may slow the flow of the river. Additionally, when in running water the trout are usually tend to gravitate to the head of the pool.

How fast the water is moving is an important factor when trout fishing, so it is critical to learn which way the water is moving and how fast it is moving. Typically trout suspend in places where the fast and slow water streams join. It can be found right by the main flow of a body of water. You can figure out where this is by searching for the head of the pool and finding where the faster body of water comes in.

In some areas there could be a log that topples into the water at an angle to the current and the log is still holding on by its roots and all. This is often referred to by trout fishermen as a sweeper. Trout fishing can be effective here when fishing right outside where the branches are.

Trout fishing will usually be good when the right lure is used. The good news is, there are a number of unique baits that can be applied in trout fishing, and a good portion of them are right there in nature. Some ideas of trout fishing bait include earthworms, insect larvae, egg sacs and crayfish. You can also use man-made baits like spoons and spinners. Some good baits are right there at your local grocer, including marshmallows and corn. Flies can be used additionally and they can be either wet or dry.

The preferred gear to use for trout fishing is probably a graphite or fiberglass rod that is around 6' tall and a ten pound test line or less. A swivel is recommended needed. In the case that you are fly fishing, you’ll need a longer rod. You’ll want a nine foot long graphite fly rod for fly fishing. Also, if you think you might be able to to catch a trout greater than weighing over three pounds you will need seventy-five feet of extra line.

You can see why trout fishing is so popular. Not only do they make for healthy eating, they are a joy and require some skills to catch. If you are interested in more information in trout fishing, find a trout fishing expert or a sales person in your local fishing tackle store. If you have a friend or someone in the family who is an ace in trout fishing you can ask that person as well.

Can it be better to gamble online?

When I was young, so many years ago I can hardly remember, gambling was so much easier. You either got in your car or on an airplane, and went where people were playing casino games for real money, or you asked around and found out where the floating games were for that night. I guess when I was starting out, the illegal kind was always more exciting until you got to know everyone — then it was down to a routine. After that, going to a real casino had the edge. But everything loses its shine eventually.

Then along came the internet with a whole lot more freedom. Although when you look around today there is a whole new bunch of casinos opening up, nothing really beats the convenience of sitting at home and playing your way through games in comfort. Yet, there is a “crackdown”. The US has been legislating. This has produced international litigation with Antigua taking action against the US. This is more action than you see in some casinos.

I suppose some of the motivation for regulation is the sense that online gaming is not regulated. Go into any real world casino, and you should always be “safe” — except from your own gambling habit, of course. There are security cameras everywhere making sure no-one is going to cheat you. Regulators check the slots to make sure they are all working properly. Once you are online, there are no external eyes looking after you. You have to protect yourself. Except you do not know who the company is behind the online casino.

Another explanation for the US Government’s action is protectionism — that too many online dollars means less profit for the real world gaming establishments in the US.

So why should anyone want to play online? All you have are a few animated versions of the casino games that lack any sense of physical involvement. Worse, some of the games just are not the same. For example, thanks to the random number generator, counting the cards in online blackjack is a waste of time.

But because the overheads for running an online casino are significantly less than the real world equivalents (paying salaries to all those countless people is not required), the online payout schedules are more generous. Online operators can afford to return more of the stake money to the players and still make a good profit. This means you get better odds on the slots and at the roulette table than you would in the real world. But even more importantly, once you are online, you can switch games at the click of a mouse. You no longer have to wait on other players or croupiers. There is always another game ready to play. Because you do not have people looking over your shoulder (and judging you), you have more freedom to learn new games or try out different strategies without people getting impatient with you. And finally, you can get free money. In the real world, you can get drinks, food and, sometimes, accommodation comped. Online, the only thing the casino can give you is a credit of money.

So does that mean online gaming is a “good thing”? The only thing wrong with it is that it is too easy to play. There you are at home or sitting in a hot spot with your wifi laptop and there is no-one to tap you on the shoulder to warn you that you are riding a losing streak into bankruptcy. But, so long as you have your gambling under control, you say when, where and how long you play. What can be better than that?

Christmas Party Games for Young Children

When planning Christmas games for young children, the options are endless. Make sure you provide room to run, do a little planning and the kids are sure to have a good time.

Let's start with a few relay race ideas. Begin with a candy cane relay. Give each team 4 candy canes (and be sure to have a few more in case some break) and have the child who's running hold the candy canes between their fingers, with the crooked part of the cane hanging over their fingers. But tell them not to use their thumbs. The canes should be just carefully perched between their fingers.

The children run to their teammate, exchange the candy canes (again, only using fingers), and that teammate runs to the other end and does the same. The game is over when only one team still has candy canes that haven't dropped on the floor.

Another fun relay that kids love is pass the ornament. In this game, each team gets one ornament (a lightweight, basic thin glass one is fine) and a straw. They must blow through the straw to get the ornament down the line, then the next child blows on their straw to get the ornament back down the line. Make sure each child has a fresh straw, as you don't want everyone to get sick.

This next simple relay game can be played with just about anything that signifies Christmas. You could have the children pass a Santa hat (perhaps requiring them to wear the hat as they run down the line) or have them wear Christmas socks that they then have to take off and get to the next child during the relay.

"Santa Says" is a fun game that all children will know how to play because it's just like "Simon Says". Before playing it, confirm that each child is familiar with "Simon Says" and then create a series of orders from "Santa", like "Santa says, touch your toes", "Santa says bend your knees" and so on. But sometimes leave the "Santa says" part off and trick the children. Always a popular game!

Young children love the "freeze dance" which is often played in preschool and kindergarten. Only in this game, you create a Christmas freeze dance: here you play some Christmas music, let the children do a little dance, then turn the music off and the children must "freeze". If there will be several sit-down games played at the party, this is a great way to let the children use some energy before they have to sit down and focus on the other games.

Young children can play the "clue" game as long as the questions are kept to their knowledge of various things surrounding Christmas. The game is played like this: the teacher gives a series of clues about something Christmas related and keeps giving clues until someone shouts out the answer. It might go something like this:

Answer: Santa's sleigh

Clue: I'm thinking of something big

Clue: It helps Santa on Christmas Eve

Clue: It holds a lot of presents

Clue: It's very fast

You keep giving clues until he children figure out the answer. Since these are young children, don't give clues that are too difficult or beyond their knowledge.

Kids love toss games, so why not create a snowball toss game at Frosty's belly? Get or make a large cardboard cutout of Frosty the Snowman and cut a hole in his stomach. You can create snowballs out of several things. Take plastic bags and put mini marshmallows inside, or use Styrofoam balls. If you use the latter, don't make the children throw the "snowballs" very far since the Styrofoam won't go that far. Have the children stand a distance back from Frosty (you can determine this depending on the age of the children and space you have available) and have them toss the snowballs into Frosty's tummy. First one to get all 3 snowballs in the tummy wins a prize!
