How Prices of Baseball Collectibles Are Determined

When you start your search for baseball collectibles, you may be wondering what constitutes a certain price for one keepsake versus another. There are many factors that come into play in determining the value of a piece of baseball memorabilia.

The first is the demand for the player or team representing your keepsake. If you specialize in baseball collectibles such as cards, then you want to make sure you're paying a fair price for them.

When considering the price of any baseball collectible that has to do with a certain player, make sure you know his record and statistics. Is he in the Hall of Fame? Did he shatter other players' records as he made his way to a top spot in the sport?

DW Smith Designs Local Park

It has been dreamed about for more than 50 years by various city officials charged with providing recreational opportunities here and on Tuesday night, Manahassett Creek Park — which one day will be the largest park in the city — received construction approval.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to award the construction job to a Freehold firm that agreed to build the facility for just under $4 million.

Precise Construction was among 11 bidders on the project. Bids were received April 25, and Precise was the lowest, agreeing to perform the work for an amount not to exceed $3,975,830.

"We had a large number of bidders, which we were happy about," said City Business Administrator Howard H. Woolley Jr. Officials had predicted there would be substantial interest in the project due to a lack of the lack of construction jobs right now.

The park, which will be home to the lion's share of the city's athletic fields, is in the city's north end. It is bounded by the creek and Long Branch Avenue to the east, Airsdale Avenue to the south, Narragansett Avenue to the west and Bay Avenue to the north.

The athletic fields are a critical need in the city, because as an urban area, there is little space available on which to construct athletic facilities. In addition, after the school system embarked on a major expansion program some five years ago, many of its fields and courts were rendered unavailable for recreational purposes.

The Project has been on the Planning Board agenda in various forms for more than five decades but shifted into high gear in 2002 when Mayor Adam Schneider directed Jacob L. Jones, the city’s director of community and economic development, and Carl Turner, the city’s assistant planning director, to explore with the state what aid might be available to help bring the park to fruition.

“To get to this point was quite a challenge,” Jones admitted. It was one of the few jobs the city has bidded recently to come in under the allocated amount, said Kevin J. Hayes Sr., the city’s director of Building and Development.

The state’s Green Acres program will provide $1,010,333.50 while another grand – in the amount of $6,438.99 – came in from the state Department of Community Affairs.

The bid amount was good news to City Council President Michael DeStefano and Councilman David G. Brown because the council had agreed to phase in the project over several years to keep costs down.

New, residents will get a completed park a year after construction begins.

Last fall, the council approved a $2.6 million bond ordinance, authorizing $2.48 million in bond anticipation notes to pay the cost of the 22-acre park, which will include two soccer fields, a football field, a softball field, two Little League fields, four tennis courts and two basketball courts. The athletic fields are a critical need in the city, because as an urban area, there is little space available on which to construct athletic facilities.

Digital Imaging â€“ Create Digital Files from Anything with a Scanner

This is a very exciting chapter, because now we know a little more about choosing a computer and printer, a scanner can open up a whole new world to digital imaging. If you have a digital camera, then with a USB lead you can download your images straight from your camera to your computer. If you don’t have a digital camera, then you can still scan your photos, documents, slides, negatives or whatever you desire into your computer via your scanner. To help with your digital imaging, let’s have a look at the types of scanners to look for …

The Flatbed Scanner

This is the most common type of scanner, which acts like a mini photocopier. Of course, you can scan in documents for print output, but you also get to save the file as a ‘digital’ file. Flatbed scanners are normally A4 size (scans up to approx 8” x 11”), although you can purchase an A3 size (which is twice the size) and they are quite cheap to buy. If you have many printed photos you would like to file, scanning them is ideal, as once your photos are scanned, you can save them in digital format on your computer and organise them into folders.

Flatbed Scanner Resolution

Similarly to printers, the scanner resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). To achieve high quality printing results, scan at maximum resolution. The file will be heavier in size, but computers nowadays have multiple gigabyte hard-drives, so storing them shouldn’t be too much of a problem. I have a scanner with an optical resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi, which does quite a good job. There are scanners now with even higher resolutions e.g. 1200 x 2400 dpi – the higher the better, as this will allow you to scan an image for print output to much larger sizes than A4 (that is if you have at least an A3 or large format printer).

What size Resolution and Measurement do you want your final print?

Bearing in mind what size your printer will print up to - say for example you have an A4 size printer (prints up to approx 8” x 11”)

300 dpi for printed output is classed as high resolution (although you can go higher – but this just increases your digital file size, and in most cases might not be necessary).

So you want to print your picture at a size of 8” x 8” with a resolution of 300 dpi

Your original image is 4” x 4” – you scan it in at 600 dpi (= 300 dpi x2). By doubling the resolution in your scanning options, will take into account the final printed version of 8” x 8” at 300 dpi (which you can set these measurements in your image editing software program, once scanned in).

Of course if you have a larger than A4 printer, you could you can print out at least 12” x 12” in measurement from your original 4” x 4” image. If your scanner allows, as we’re tripling the size, try setting the scanning resolution to 1200 dpi. Note: If you decided to scan this size still at 600 dpi, it should still be high enough resolution for printing. I had an image artwork printed up to 33” x 23” from an 8” x 11” at 150dpi and the printed size still looked okay. (I wouldn’t go below 150 dpi for printing though), but it’s worth experimenting!

Scan in your Artwork and Textures

Flatbed scanners can also scan artwork, drawings, textures and anything you can get under the lid of your scanner. I once read in a book to do with scanning that someone placed a fish on the glass plate of a scanner to scan in the scale texture. I might give that one a miss, but that’s up to you if you don’t mind smelling of fish!

Film Scanners

If you use a film camera, then a film scanner would be very beneficial, as you can scan in negatives and slides (both colour and B/W). Many film scanners come with adaptors also for scanning in APS film. Film scanners generally have much higher resolution settings than flatbed scanners. I bought a film scanner around the year 2000 which has an optical input resolution of 2820 dpi.

Tip: when scanning in negatives, I choose my highest input resolution setting, and after scanning my negative into my image editing software, my measurement comes in at approx 1” x 1.5” at 2400 ppi (pixels per inch). Although the file size is only small in measurement size, I undertake any image editing and then re-save the file at this size. Incidentally this file size is 27.2M (megabytes).

Then when I wish to resize my image for printing I can easily resize to any size I want. As my large format printer can print a height of 24” and any length, I can resize to 33” x 23.25” (A1 poster size) at 300 dpi without losing any clarity of detail.

Scanning Speeds

Scanning speeds can vary from model to model and could take from 1 to a few minutes to scan. Note, if you’re scanning at a higher resolution, then it is going to take a little longer.

You can buy flatbed scanners with hoods for scanning film negatives and slides, but it’s worth checking out what optical input resolution they will go up to, before buying. All in all, it depends on what you want to do with your output?

Scanning Software

Software that comes with your scanner for you to install in your computer is reasonably straightforward. Standard procedure is to make a Preview Scan before you finally scan into your image editing software. The software also has adjustment features for brightness, cropping, colourization etc, and is great if you don’t have image editing software. What I normally do is perhaps use the crop feature so I’m not scanning in unnecessary editing later, but then use my image editing tools for brightening, cleaning up etc before I finally print.

PC and MAC Compatibility

Whatever computer system you have, make sure the scanner is compatible with your system before you buy.

The history of Fantasy Football actually began several years before the first fantasy team was selected. Although the exact details seem to differ according to who is telling the story, there is no doubt that it was one Wilfred Winkenbach that first had the idea of a fantasy sport, wherein participants would formulate their own teams and determine the success or otherwise of these teams by means of the statistics of the individual team members.

Golf Came First!

In fact, it was not football but golf that was the first sport to be played under fantasy rules. Wilfred Winkenbach devised fantasy golf in the latter part of the 1950s, in which each player selected a team of professional golfers and the person with the lowest combined total of stokes at the end of the tournament would win. Golf is a simple fantasy game to administer and keep tabs on, since you are concerned only with the scores of your team members without anything else to complicate it.

As with many breakthrough ideas, the concept was simple and it was extended to baseball before Winkenbach had the idea of fantasy football. This was not surprising, since he was part owner of Oakland Raiders at the time - in fact, what WAS surprising was that he developed fantasy golf and baseball before fantasy football! The football idea came to him on a wet October evening in 1962, when he discussed his idea with the Oakland Raiders PR man Bill Tunnell and the Oakland Tribune sports journalist, Scotty Stirling.

Early Scoring System

They were actually spending the night in a Manhattan hotel during a Raiders' tour. The original idea was formulated into a football league comprising eight teams, and they also formulated a points scoring system somewhat different to the norm whereby 25 points were awarded for a field goal, a passing touchdown or a touchdown reception. Ten points were given for an extra point, and a massive 200 points for a kick-off, punt or pick-six. The scoring system has changed over the years, and various leagues now have their own scoring systems which offer fewer points than the above.

Once they returned to Oakland the three of them pitched their idea to George Ross, then sports editor of the Tribune. They decided that they would have to formulate a set of rules, and came up with the GOPPPL. This strange-sounding code, which was adopted in 1963, actually stood for the Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League. A prognosticator is one who makes a prediction, or foretells results, which describes their activity precisely.

GOPPPL Rules!

Among the GOPPPL rules were the three prerequisites that participants had to meet in order to take part in the league:

- Have an administrative affiliation with an AFL professional team.

- Be directly related to professional football through journalism.

- Have either purchased or sold at least ten tickets for Oakland Raider's 1963 season.

The next significant advance was the opening of the Kings X sports bar in Oakland in 1968 that held annual fantasy football drafts. This was done by one Andrew Mousalimas, and provided a kick to the league that continued to enjoy a steady growth through the 1970s and beyond. While its rate of spread did not exactly set the country alight, it was unexpected and the increasing following held promise of spectacular things to come.

The way it works is that participants in the fantasy league buy a team of American football players by auction or draft. The players are chosen according their particular skills or attributes and you score points that depend upon the way that your players perform in the actual games. The performance is generally determined by statistical analysis, and points can be awarded as previously indicated. The players themselves are real football players, playing for their own teams. It is only the team and the league that is fantasy.

Some fantasy leagues are run just like real leagues, with drafts, playoffs, salary caps and so on. Players can be given a value and you can only register players up to certain overall value for your team. This prevents everybody selecting only the very best players for their team, and the possibility of hundreds of teams with exactly the same personnel.

Fantasy Football Now

Fantasy Football simmered for a few years, although never kicked off completely until the personal computer and the internet made the gathering of statistics unbelievably simple. Prior to that, the idea was a good one, but it was not easy to carry out in practice. Teams and scores were difficult to update because you would have had to find all the statistics for each player in your team, how many rushes were made and yards gained. Not easy to do manually, but now real-time scoring is very accessible.

The internet has now made this simple, and the popularity of fantasy football has risen exponentially to the extent that it is popular throughout the entire world, and is participated in by around 20 million Americans, each with their own virtual team, and competition can be either league based, or head-to-head where you play against a specific opponent.

Elect a commissioner. The commissioner should be somebody who every team owner respects, or at least trusts. The commissioner, who most likely also owns a team in the league, is responsible for the league constitution, bylaws, configuration and all final decisions. The commissioner also collects and distributes the league contributions and maintains the peace. A good website will grant the commissioner a set of tools that allow him/her with the power to control what functions the owners are allowed to perform (managing their roster, posting messages), to manage another owner's roster, rerun stats and many other controlling functions.

Configuring the League

Setting the scoring system and rules for your league are very important. There are many variations to the game and scoring systems for fantasy football are as different as the NFL and Arena Football Leagues. Make sure all rules and settings are set in stone before the draft is held. This article could go one for many, many pages just discussing the variety of different scoring configuration options available in fantasy football. Let's take a peek at the most basic settings.

Ultimately, it all comes down to how scoring is set up. Though many early leagues focused simply on touchdowns, most leagues nowadays award points for touchdowns and yardag. Four points are commonly awarded to any player who throws a touchdown pass and six points for rushing or receiving touchdowns. One point is commonly awarded for every 25 passing yards and every 10 rushing or receiving yards. It is tempting to go with the feast-or-famine approach and draft a QB and his main WR. Often, this is a bad idea, unless, of course, you have Tom Brady and Randy Moss on your fantasy team. Some leagues also give bonus points for longer TDs, such as, two points for TDs between 50 and 81 yards and three points for TDs over 81 yards.

The size of rosters also varies from league to league. Most leagues have a fixed number of starting positions and a fixed number of bench players, usually adding up to 15-17 players. The starting positions (slots) usually feature one QB, two RBs, three WRs, one TE, one K and one D. Variations include using Special Teams or individual defensive players instead of a single defense. Also, "swing" positions are becoming more prevalent. These are also known as "flex" positions. This slot allows for more than one position. The swing positions often used are a combination of WR/TE or RB/WR, though there are a handful of others. In the end, the accumulated points of one team's starters are matched up against the points of another team's starters and the end result is either a victory or a loss.

Occasionally, a tie will sneak its way into the picture. A good website will give you the option of breaking ties during the regular season. Tie-breakers are mandatory should they occur during the playoffs.

Set the Schedule

The website should generate the league schedule after the draft is complete using the divisional structure the commissioner has established. League schedules are generally set up so teams in the same division play each other more often than other divisions. Ultimately, it is ideal to have a balanced schedule.Before the draft, the playoff schedule needs to be determined. This will vary depending on how many teams are in your league and how many teams the commissioner chooses to make the playoffs. The championship game needs to be scheduled between two teams no later than week 17 of the NFL season. One common choice is to finish the fantasy football regular season in week 13 or 14 and allow 6 teams to make the playoffs. This will grant the top 2 teams a playoff Bye, thus awarding them for their performance in the regular season. No one likes to dominate the regular season and then lose out in the first week of the playoffs.

Drafting your Players

Rosters are filled out by running a player draft. The draft order is randomized by the commissioner or the website. Unlike the NFL draft, fantasy football drafts are normally run serpentine style. For instance, in a 12-team league, the draft order would be 1 through 12, with the 12th team having the first pick of the second round and going back up in reverse order. In that scenario, the first team to pick wouldn't select again until the 24th pick, but would then start the third round with the 25th selection, should they not fall asleep during the lull. Should this happen, the draft control will make the selection for the snoozing owner.

Drafts can be held online or offline. If held online, drafts are normally held real-time so each owner can make their choices based on how the draft is evolving. This can be a bit time-consuming, so another option is to run an automated draft. An increasingly popular draft method is having a fixed budget and bidding on players to fill out a roster.

Maintaining your Roster

Throughout the season, you will need to change players out in an effort to manage injuries, Bye weeks or address weak areas by trading from areas of strength. Teams can trade and pick up free agents until the end of the season, unless there are deadlines established for these actions. Trades tend to have some sort of approval process in place to assure the league that trades are considered fair. The approval process generally falls on the shoulders of the commissioner to make a decision or upon the owners in the league to submit a vote (majority rules).

When it comes to free agents, it is common for leagues to apply a waiver system. True free agents can be acquired without application of any rules. Players attempted to be acquired that are in waiver status have to flow through waiver processing to determine which team will be awarded the player. There are a number of waiver processing rules.

The most common is a rolling priority list. This is initially established in the reverse order of the draft order and then gets adjusted as teams acquire players in waiver status. The team with the lowest waiver priority number is awarded the player desired when waiver processing occurs. When that processing happens, the team's waiver priority is then set to the highest number and all teams between have their number adjusted down by one. Other waiver processing options allow teams to bid on free agents, award a player on waivers to the team with the worst record among acquiring teams or have made the least numbers of transactions.

Making your Push to the Championship

It is very difficult to make the playoffs, let alone the Championship game, in a fantasy football league without devoting a lot of time to the game, making wise draft and transaction choices and having your players stay healthy. You have no control over the latter, so your team must be equipped to handle devastating injuries, should they occur.

- The common draft rule is to back up your studs. If you have LaDainian Tomlinson, grab his backup in the draft as well. If you have Peyton Manning, grab his backup in the draft. It is a tough choice as Peyton does not get hurt, but, should it happen, would you feel more comfortable with his backup in your lineup, an untested rookie or the Jets QB?

- Another common sense rule is to not draft injury-prone players or running backs over 30 too early. It is hard to justify the reward over the risk. Drafting Deuce McAlister in the 4th round last year in many leagues was a season killer when Adrian Peterson was still available. Out of all the positions, rookies make the biggest impact in the running back category.

- The most important rule is to know your league settings. Be aware of the scoring system, waiver processing rules and all deadlines. You cannot build a balanced team unless you know how to balance the scoring across the starting positions on your team.

Once you have that accomplished, you want to review your team at the midpoint of your season and evaluate what it will look like in the playoff weeks. If you have some players that you feel may be looking at getting some rest, it is best to trade them before the trade deadline to ensure that your roster is as strong as possible during the playoffs. It is difficult to gauge how much a player will play in weeks 13-17 far in advance, but it is a big risk to go into the playoff battle with players who may sit after one half.

One alternative to that is to utilize a fantasy football feature offered by one site; Maximum Fantasy Sports. This feature is In-Game player changes. This feature can be used all season or have it turned on at a certain point in the season, such as, the first week of playoffs. Configuration of this feature allows an owner to swap in different, unplayed players at their respective positions. So, if Joseph Addai is scheduled to play the first half of Indy's week 15 game and you have Kenton Keith on your bench, you could swap out Addai for the second half and swap in Keith to maximize performance at your running back slot.

End of the Season Reflection.

I hope you spend your off-season gloating about your team's dominance. No matter how your season ends, you want to review what went wrong and what went right during your season so you can improve the following year. Also, take notes on little used players that showed a lot of promise as the season went on. In the off-season, pay attention to free agency and the NFL draft. Note which teams improved in skill areas that may result in new starters that you can draft in later rounds in your upcoming fantasy football draft. Though the NFL season ends in February, fantasy football is a year-round fixation.

When fishing in Devon these tinned foods can make an exceptional alternative to what we know as normal baits and the price is very good as well, so investigate them, experiment and see what works for you, if they are not oily or flavoursome enough for your, ( or you fishing) taste, then add some more flavours. We try and encourage everyone on our Devon fishing holiday to document their results, unless they have an extraordinary memory.

First chick peas, these can be hair-rigged with a size 12 hook or as double bait on a size 10 or 8 hook.

These would be fished over a bed of chick peas mixed with hemp.

At our holiday cottages and fishing centre we have found this method can produce the capture of some nice Tench, also with the occasional carp as an added bonus.

Black eye and red kidney beans are very effective bait for carp. Again these should be fished legered on a hair-rigged over a bed of particles. They can also be float fished in the margins also over a bed of particle baits.

I love that phrase “over a bed of particles” or should that be “on a nest of green salads” for those not in the know, particles are a lovely term for what were originally the main diet of our fish, smaller “particles” that they would root about for, in their normal forage for food, it took them time, but they were well used to taking the effort. Then a boillie would arrive, manor from heaven, but how to get it off that spikey thing.

All of these products should be well prepared, but however, due to some anglers using some products that are not prepared properly and ending up in the death of our fish, your sport and our livelihood, check with your local lake to see if you are able to use these products.

Fishing for the elusive Roach

When fishing in Devon it is not all about the Carp fishing, you can be delighted that Devon fishing holidays also have an excellent head of silver fish including some cracking Roach hitting the 2 – 3lb mark, we have been voted in the top ten for Roach fishing.

So don’t dismiss the retiring roach, Carp fishermen, as it is a member of the Carp family

The Roach, Rutilus rutilus, family Cyprinidae. Great fishing sport

It has relatively large scales and its back is coloured dark brown or grey. With a bluish or greenish sheen, the sides are silvery white and they have a white underbelly.

Fishing for the Roach doesn’t have to be too hard and here are some of our self catering cottages and fishing tips to get you started.

The Roach is one of the commonest fish in UK waters and can be found in stillwaters, canals, lakes and rivers, where it feeds on crustaceans, aquatic plants and detritus (dead or decaying organic matter). The Roach is generally found living in shoals and can often feed at all levels.

To start your session you want to be fishing at full depth and continue to loose feed or cloud bait at regular intervals, as you continue feeding the swim adjust your depth upwards because, remember, Roach feed at all levels, they will start to compete for the loose feed and will make their way to the source of the feed. You can also keep the fish feeding on the bottom by throwing larger particle baits into the swim.

Larger Roach tend to be particularly elusive and can keep to the outer fringes of the shoal, smaller individuals are easier to catch on relatively light line. Roach are infamous for their ability to throw the hook during a catch, which further perpetuates the idea that larger roach are notoriously difficult to bank.

Best holiday cottages and fishing baits for Roach are hemp, small redworm, bloodworm, punched or flaked bread, casters and good old Maggots. The only limit in type is regarding the size of the bait. Boilies and luncheon meat are generally avoided by Roach because they are too large for them to swallow.

Roach can be float fished and you can use legered baits. Don’t forget steady loose feeding will tempt the Roach, because as we have previously said, they congregate in shoals to feed, be careful not to spook them for they will spook as a shoal, you need to gain their confidence, they then will make more positive bites and more aggressive feeding.

At our self catering cottages and fishing centre the Roach are no different to others, a small freshwater and brackish water fish native to most of Europe and western Asia. It is typically a small fish, reaching 350 mm (14 inches) long, rarely 450 mm (17 inches), and weighing up to 1 kg (2¼ lb), rarely 1.8 kg (4 lb).

Name's origin: from Old French roche, possibly from Germanic.

Description: It has an elongated tailfin with silver scales.

Habitat: Often found in moving water, the roach likes depths of about 2 or 3 m (6-9 ft); it also enjoys weedy waters.

Behaviour: a gregarious fish that lives in schools or shoals; the bigger ones keep themselves somewhat apart from the others.

Food: small molluscs, insect larvae, worms, moss, algae, surface insects.

Reproduction: from April to June or July when the water's temperature is at least 12°C (54°F), the female lays from 50,000 to 100,000 eggs. Roach grow slowly over a span of 2 or 3 years.

The roach has an outer skin of several layers about 100 microns thick. It is made up of connective cells. This epidermis has no glands, but there are glandular cells which secrete mucus that protects the fish's scales. The scales sheathe the roach in a kind of exoskeleton.

The roach has a head with eyes, and blind (ie without an opening at one end) nostrils, which do not open into the mouth as is true of other fish. The roach also has a lateral line along each side, running from one end of its body to the other. This line of special scales is equipped with holes which connect the fish's outer body to the nervous system, enabling it to detect movements nearby by picking up small variations in long wavelengths in the water, caused by movements of other creatures.

The roach has a rather streamlined shape, being four times as long as it is wide. Two kinds of fins can be noted:

unmatched fins, including the dorsal and caudal fins;

matched fins, forming symmetrical pairs, including the pelvic fins at the rear and the pectoral fins farther forward.

The former give the fish stability in the water, and the latter are used for orientation.

The roach has four pairs of gills set side by side that have hairs whose function is to keep foreign particles out. The gills together form a V-shaped set. There are also the gill slits which are used as exchange surfaces to extract oxygen from the water.

The heart is found beside the gills, which allows blood to be pumped through the gills with a considerable pressure. The circulatory system is otherwise rather simple. Deoxygenated blood passes through the heart only once.

When fishing in Devon Tuna has proven to be a major top bait for catching Carp over the years, producing a regular good performance for good weights. We have been using it for a long time at Newbarn to catch some very large Carp, try using Tuna Boillies and pop ups.

Another great additive for a ground bait is salt, so an ideal tinned tuna would be tuna in brine as the salt content helps as an added extra to the ground bait mix.

Match Fishing

When fishing in Devon, here at Newbarn Farm I am proud to say that we now have an official match lake, Willow pool. Which contains a good head of Roach (6oz up to 2lb plus), Tench, Bream and Golden Rudd.

When having a Devon fishing holiday, should you wish and if there is one arranged, you can enter a match, you are given a place to fish but not what areas to fish within your space. Well a good place to start is with the margin cover, island cover or far bank cover. Do this before putting any loose feed in because sometimes you can often catch the odd mug fish at the start of the competition.

While doing this pick a spot and concentrate on feeding an area so you can go there when you have finished searching the margins.

As for depths it is always good to plumb up an area to try to find any interesting features in your swim. Another thing to try is fishing shallower areas and working out to deeper areas during the session.

Match fishing is great fun, especially when your good at it and get good results. It’s the same with most things fishing when your first starting out you should try and watch as much match fishing as you can, rather than taking part.

The beauty of holiday cottages and fishing is that you have the total flexibility to watch good anglers fish, it is a great way to learn. Watching bad anglers fish can also be a great way to learn. If you can talk to the good anglers and learn what and why they do what they do, you can learn a great deal. Don’t forget to be considerate and don’t interfere, you need to read whether you are welcome or not.

Try to understand what they are doing and why they do it. Then go out and use it, see what results you get and mold it to suit yourself.

Read as much as you can about all aspects of fishing, books, magazines and articles. Remember what you have read and use it when you are fishing next, don’t be afraid to experiment. But you need to be able to remember one experiment under one set of conditions doesn’t mean it will necessarily work in another set of conditions. Write it down, if you think your not going to be able to remember, even down to the air temperature, water temperature and air pressure.

Then remember the old adage, practice makes perfect. Try it again, change it, remember what works, and remember what doesn’t. Then when you get the opportunity try a few matches.

If you can get a rounded experience of all things fishing, you can bring much more choices to your match fishing if things are not going well. There is no substitute for more experience and being able to adapt.

Don’t overcomplicate things, use your tried and tested successful ways of fishing, the ones you know work. I don’t mean exclude anything new, but if you want to experiment, don’t do it when your match fishing and under pressure. If you want to take your fishing down to the nuts and bolts, Reel, Rod, Line, Hook, Bait, Fish, so don’t get confused. Set your gear out in a methodical manner, that you are used to, know where everything is.

Don’t be disappointed if you don’t do well, learn from it. Don’t go out and buy an expensive bit of kit that will “transform your fishing experience”. At the end of the day, it is you and the fish.

Correspondingly, if you do great, don’t think you are the best thing since sliced bread or a luscious bollie, next time you will almost certainly be disappointed. Give yourself a debriefing, try and see why you were successful that time.

Never forget, Luck is where being prepared meets opportunity.

But above all have the most fun you can possibly have. Fishing is a smiling sport, full of great “ones that got away stories” it is you pitting yourself against a worthy competitor, sometimes winning, sometimes loosing, but always enjoying.

Cookware

Don’t use styrofoam cups while camping, no matter how convenient they may seem. The same goes for paper plates and disposable plastic forks. Instead, camp with reusable dishes and utensils and wash them after each use. This will drastically decrease the amount of trash you burn (bad for the enviro-gases pollute the air) or throw away (plastics don’t biodegrade quickly, overfilling our landfills).

Recycle

Think about what you do at home to be ecologically friendly and institute it on your camping trip. Keep paper bags or bins around for recycling. You can then easily take this stuff back with you and recycle it appropriately when you get home. Also, consider composting your trash in a bucket if you can.

Go Low -Tech

A tent and sleeping bag is far more environmentally friendly than a motor home or camper trailer. Motor homes require large amounts of fuel and energy to keep in operation every day. With the cost of energy and fuel where it is right now, your camping trip could cost you a lot less if you consider more green camping alternatives.

You can enjoy a true outdoor camping excursion more if you do it electricity free. Leave the games, portable TVs, and computers at home. Pack a cell phone or PDA in case of emergencies but turn it off or just plain leave it alone. Every little bit helps when it comes to reducing how much energy we consumer every year.

Cookstoves

Unless you’re allergic to smoke or have strong asthma symptoms, the campfire is still the most ecologically friendly way to cook food. Fueled grills require propane or electricity to operate. Campfire requires wood that can be easily picked-up off the forest floor and a light source. It may not be practical to cook everything you want on a fire but you can use it for some things to help reduce the amount of time you cook on a fueled cook stove.

Going on a green camping trip can actually be one of the more fun vacations you take this summer. Look into ways you can help make less of an impact on the environment the next time you venture out into your home state’s mountain country or forested parks.

Fishing in Devon Pop-ups are a very useful bait to have in your armoury against the elusive and wiry fish and can be used on allsorts of rigs, chod rigs, helicopter rigs etc.

Whether it is a handful of people or a couple dozen, keeping your airsoft matches moving and everyone involved is a hard task. There are a couple of things you can do before the match starts to insure that games move along at a nice pace.

Have a set time between matches for reloading, discussion, hydrating, etc. If there is not a set time between matches or a time limit is not enforced, you will find that the time between games will grow longer and longer as the day goes along. This has a tendency to frustrate those that are the most excited or have a limited time frame in which to play airsoft. By regulating the in between time to 10 to 15 minutes it is possible to squeeze a few extra games in on game day.

Have a set match length. Given a chance, the length of each game will grow like the national debt. By having a set time with a 5 and 10 minute warning, you can keep the games shorter and the action more even. Besides the added benefit of more airsoft games in a day, the fixed time length will shorten the time players have to spend on the sidelines, and will and a sense of urgency and excitement when time is running out.

Some fields use a regeneration system during game play. Regeneration allows a player to return to a predetermined location after being hit and then return to game play. Combining these game types with a fixed game time and set break time between games will allow you to play more games and reduce the sideline time players will experience. Especially for your weekly games, you may find that having more games and keeping a total score of games won will add more excitement to your airsoft games.

Always remember to mix your game types up, as not everyone will have the same likes when it comes to game play. Given that being hit in the head, neck, or ear will cause no permanent damage, you must decide if the increased ability to hear and locate sounds is worth the pain risk.

The choice of magazines you use in your airsoft gun, may also lead to problems on the field. Low and mid capacity magazines are advisable, do to their ability to hold each BB in place. Most high capacity magazines utilize a reservoir that allows ammo to rattle around inside the thin metal container. You can usually hear someone carrying a high capacity magazine from far away, especially if the magazine is partially expended. Medium capacity magazines are a better option as some can handle large quantities of ammo, while maintaining the position of each individual BB.

Digital Television Transition- High Definition Answers

This is the biggest thing to happen to TVs since the introduction of color. Digital television is no longer a subject discussed only among the techno-savvy and gadget-obsessed. It's now a hot topic ignited by the United States government, fueled by cable providers and electronics retailers, and spread in the everyday conversations between even the most casual consumers. You can try to avoid the escalating digital hype, but by February 2009, the digital transition will hit home whether or not you're ready for it.

The switch from analog broadcasting to digital has been years in the making. In the 1990s, Congress passed a mandate to change TV broadcasting from analog to digital to free-up more bands of the broadcast spectrum for public safety and emergency services, as well as for popular wireless services. Currently, most TV stations broadcast on digital and analog channels, with over 1,600 out of 1,745 full-power stations broadcasting digital programs. After February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations are required by law to end analog broadcasts.

David Rehr, President and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, considers this digital television transition "the most significant advancement of television technology since color TV was introduced." Television broadcasters will be able to offer programming with characteristics similar to DVDs: higher quality pictures without the typical TV interference or "snow." But you don't have to see DTV to tell the difference; the multi-channel digital surround sound, including Dolby Digital 5.1, will turn casual TV watching into a theatrical experience.

For many people, these benefits will come at a cost. Consumers who use an antenna on an analog set and do not subscribe to cable or satellite will need to upgrade in order to continue receiving television programming. Upgrading can be done in one of three ways: purchase a digital converter box (also known as a set-top box or converter box), purchase a digital television or subscribe to cable or satellite. Digital to Analog Converter Box On February 18, 2009, the curbs will not be cluttered with 70 million analog television sets and antennas. These TVs will continue to work after February 17 with the addition of a digital converter box. Because DTV broadcasters have been designated channels in the VHF and UHF bands, antennas should also continue working as long as a DTV signal is available ' so don't throw out the rabbit ears just yet.

The digital converter box is an electronic device that hooks up to an analog TV set to convert digital signals to analog signals. Converter boxes, priced from $40 to $75, can be purchased at electronics retailers across the country. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is currently providing an opportunity for consumers to cut down on the price of the digital transition. Each household may receive up to two coupons worth $40 each toward the purchase of digital converter boxes. However, the NTIA is offering enough coupons to supply only half of the nation's households. To receive these coupons while they last, consumers must apply online as soon as possible at https://www.dtv2009.gov/ or by phone at 1-888-388-2009.

Cable and Satellite Depending upon the service provider, some cable customers may also need a digital set-top box to receive and convert DTV signals. Satellite customers may need a different set-top box to receive high definition programming. Because no single information source claims to be 100% certain of exactly how the transition will affect all cable and satellite customers, the only way to know for sure is by contacting your provider.

Cable network channels such as MSNBC, Lifetime and CNN are not required by law to make the digital transition. However, some cable providers, such as Comcast, are removing popular channels like these from basic cable and offering them only in a digital broadcast tier.

Although most cable customers will be able to receive basic cable without a converter box, there may be few channels left to watch. In order to receive additional channels (including ones that were once staples in basic cable service), consumers are thus forced to upgrade their service in addition to purchasing a digital converter box.

A New TV If you want to take advantage of the full quality of DTV, you won't need a converter box ' you'll need a new digital television set. Contrary to popular assumptions, going digital does not mean going broke. As the prices of electronics continue to fall, most households are able to afford a digital televisions of some kind ' Standard Definition, Enhanced Definition or even High Definition.

Standard Definition television is the basic digital TV format; its quality is comparable to traditional analog television. Like analog TVs, SDTVs can deliver up to 480 interlaced (480i) lines of resolution and are transmitted in 4x3 ratio. Unlike analog, SDTVs can include the 16x9 widescreen aspect ratio.

Although it has the same resolution as SDTV, Enhanced Definition television provides a smoother picture because it has progressive scanning rather than interlaced scanning. EDTV can also be in 4x3 or 16x9 ratio with a resolution of 480 x 640 or 480 x 720 pixels.

The superior quality of "pure" High Definition is achieved through the combination of an HD television and an HD signal. With more lines of resolution and smaller gaps between scan lines, images on High Definition televisions are two to five times sharper than those on Standard Definition televisions. HDTVs can cost as low as $200 for a small screen LCD, or as high as $15,000 for a large flat-panel plasma. The options of HD resolution include 1080i (with more lines and pixels) or 720p (with progressive scanning for smoother images), but the difference is virtually undetectable unless the TV screen is very large. High Definition programming shown on an HDTV ' 1080i or 720p, over-the-air or cable, DLP or plasma ' is a strikingly significant upgrade from Standard Definition.

Buying Advice As of March 1, 2007, all new TVs are required to include digital tuners. While retailers may continue to sell their pre-existing stock of analog-only TVs and devices, they must indicate in a Consumer Alert that the product is analog-only.

When shopping for a new digital television, be on the lookout for product labels with tricky wording. Televisions with labels such as "Digital Monitor," "HDTV Monitor," "Digital Ready" or "HDTV Ready" do not necessarily include a digital tuner, which means the additional set-box may still be required. Whatever happened to Ajax? A generation ago, in the early 1970s, Ajax of Amsterdam were the undoubted kings of European football. Many took a city break in Amsterdam to see their unique brand of total football.

Ajax won the European Cup three times in a row, in 1971, 1972 and 1973, making them one of only three clubs in the competition’s history to earn the right to keep the trophy permanently after a hat-trick of wins – Real Madrid and later Bayern Munchen are the others. Yet, with the exception of a further win in 1995, their dominance both at home and abroad has faded away. The years of ‘Gloria Ajax’, of a ‘total football’ style that swept all before them, are now a fading memory.

Professional football only came to the Netherlands in 1954, much later than in most of Europe’s football nations. There was little in the following years to suggest a revolution was on the way, a seismic shift from the traditional dominance of Italy, Spain, Germany, England and, occasionally, Portugal.

In 1967, Ajax won their second consecutive national title and progressed to the European Cup final in 1969 - where they were comprehensively outplayed by AC Milan. A regular name on the Ajax teamsheet, however, was a young footballer named Johan Cruijff. He was soon to be the greatest footballer in Europe.

Dutch football’s first European title came in 1970 when Ajax’ great rivals, Feyenoord of Rotterdam, won the European Cup. As if stirred by that local challenge, the following year saw the start of Ajax’s near total dominance of European football. Winning three consecutive finals of the European Cup and, in 1972, winning every competition they entered – European Cup; Intercontinental Cup’ UEFA Super Cup; Dutch National Championship and the Dutch Cup - was an achievement unequalled to this day.

The club’s style was described as ‘total football’. It was emulated by the Dutch national team who reached the World Cup final on several occasions, albeit without that final victory that would have confirmed the Netherlands as the champions of the world at both national and club level.

The success started to fade in 1973 when Cruijff left Ajax to join Barcelona. Surprise defeats in Europe later that year to the likes of CSKA Sofia saw their international dominance come to an end. The club still won many national titles but it was to be a long wait, until 1995, when the top European title was back in Amsterdam.

Unfortunately for the club and its fans, most of its star players would soon leave for Italy or England. Even the club’s stadium changed from De Meer to their new home at Amsterdam ArenA. It was to be the end of an era. Recently, Ajax has struggled to hold on to its top players, all too often lured away by big money offers from English and Italian clubs.

The club still runs its respected youth programme and the talent produced by that scheme is now playing for top clubs all over Europe. Other Dutch clubs like PSV Eindhoven now rival Ajax and Feyenoord in domestic competitions, and often outshine at European level. Undoubtedly, Ajax will come again as one of Europe’s top clubs. Who knows when that will be. Whenever it happens, it will undoubtedly revive memories of ‘Gloria Ajax’ – the years that Amsterdam’s football team ruled the world. On a city break in Amsterdam, football fans with a sense of history will always remember that contribution of Ajax, truly one of the game's most influential clubs.

Single Player Issue

I have been giving some thought about the “single player” issue on a soccer team, which leads me to wonder how many coaches find themselves in the same situation, having one good player on the team?.

I often notice, while I conduct a coaching symposium and when speaking with coaches, that I hear about how most teams have only one good player, or the teams have only one player who tries very hard compared to the other players, or the team has only one player with a good attitude.

One time, just out of curiosity I took this problem and asked a question of the parents. “Are there any ‘special’ players on this team”? The following information was interesting to me and I am sure it will be interesting to all of you also. I could speak with five or six different parents from the same team and in each case there is always one "special" player. And not very surprisingly to me, that “special” player is always the son or daughter of the parent.

While I believe it is a parent’s right to think that their child is special, the fact is that coaches sometimes never stop hearing about how good their child is. This is not all, it can also go on to the next step which now is to hear that there are some players do not play the way they should, but are the coach’s favorites. So I tell my self: “It is just not enough to speak well about their own children but also speak ill of other players”.

Parents have to come to the realization that the team can not be successful unless two golden rules are mandatory on the team:

1. Parents support each other

2. Players support each other

On a related note, players have to participate on a team in which the two rules above are part of the team’s spirit. To be a top soccer player, a player must make all of the other players around him or her feel supported and always give positive feedbacks. And what is true for the players goes for the parents as well as for the coach.

Players can use different ways to help their teammates become better soccer players, and coaches can develop players through a variety of training methods. But one of the first things that must be done by the coach is to educate parents on how important it is to encourage youth players and give them positive feedbacks.

While I agree that it is important to allow parents to approach the coach and ask questions concerning issues such as playing time, I am not so much into an agreement when the conversation turns direction and concerns the quality of different players on the team. Then it becomes unacceptable for me.

Red River Ski Vacations

Krav Maga: From Mean Street Self Defense To Strip Mall Martial Art

In the beginning most martial arts styles start out of necessity of as a form of self defense that is simple and effective. However, over time things change and the original idea is becomes corrupted. Krav Maga started off as a rough and tumble form of street fighting, but like most arts; it has become “civilized”. Like with other martial arts Krav Maga’s own commercialization and popularity has become its downfall.

They say necessity is the mother of invention and there is no better example of this than in the world of self defense. Krav Maga was no different, it was born out of a need to keep the peace and survive the brutal streets of Bratislava, Krav Maga’s founder, Imi Lichtenfield grew up on theses streets during harsh times. He knew what all street fighters know; combat sports aren’t self defense. Trained to be a boxer, he learned that if you want to survive a fight, you have to go all out and take down your enemy hard and fast.

Imi Lichtenfield was born in 1910 in Hungry, but grew up in the city of Bratislava, Slovakia. He was a skilled athlete who excelled in gymnastics, boxing, and wrestling. He received his first self defense training from his father Samuel, a 30 year veteran of the local police force who had a reputation as tough, but fair man. Through his career, Samuel took down some of the city’s toughest criminals. He taught other officers what he learned at his gym “Hercules.” At the gym officers learned both how to fight and more importantly, how and when to apply force.

Though the world in 1930’s Hungary things looked bleak. The prosperity after World War I gave way to global economic crisis and political upheaval. The banners of communism and fascism were flying around Europe and governments were powerless to stop armies of thugs from imposing their will on their communities. While most people know about the battles of World War II, the fighting really started in the streets. Before the Nazis over took the country, their militia groups and gangs began terrorizing Jews and anyone else they saw as an enemy.

To protect his community in Bratislava, Imi began fighting the thugs in the streets. He quickly became aware that combat sports like boxing were inefficient and almost useless in a street fight. In the boxing ring you never have to deal with more than one fighter or worry about someone picking up a broken bottle, but in a street fight that happens all the time. Imi learned fast and these real street fights would help him develop the principals of Krav Maga. As the street fights turned into full fledged war, Imi decided to escape to the Middle East, only to have a new fight on his hands.

Imi left Nazi occupied Slovenia in 1940 and in 1942 he arrived in Palestine where Jews were fighting to make Israel an independent state. The fighting was all about close combat and guerilla warfare. Imi shared what he knew with local paramilitary groups. At this time he was exposed to the British hand-to-hand combat system developed by police officer William Fairbairn and others. Fairbairn’s system was a collection of simple techniques that could be used by both police officers and soldiers. Once again Imi learned well and when Israel became a nation he would spend the next 20 years teaching Krav Maga to the soldiers of the nation’s defense force.

Eventually civilians began learning the combat martial art for their own protection, but as it became more commercialized, it stopped being a practical form of self defense and more like a “modern martial art”. Krav Maga was first a philosophy that let a fighter deal with any situation. But it wasn’t long before the method of training changed and people started training for specific situations.

In the beginning Lichtenfield knew first hand that to survive a street fight you need a primary set of techniques and strategies that can be applied to any situation. Imi Lichtenfield taught his students to do whatever was necessary to survive, not play games. There were no hand wraps or spandex. He understood that if you want to make it home you need to have a set of tools that will work anytime in any situation. In a street fight nothing is certain and even the best combatives training is only a starting point. Don’t think that if you have learned Krav Maga that you will be ready for anything, because it is only the beginning. If you want to win in a close combat situation you need to keep things simple and effective, so don’t get bogged down by to much information.

Today popular Krav Maga has been described as from everything to a form of Judo to a Mixed Martial Art. It has left the street and taken on the roll of a martial art, using sporting techniques misapplied to self defense situation. Students wear hand wraps, boxing gloves, have belt ranks and are taught situation specific defense techniques, just like the ones taught in the vast majority of martial arts studios. The only thing separating popular Krav Maga from the rest of the pack is the name and the marketing. They have the story right, but the product is no different. Fortunately there are a few proponents of the old ways still about. I hope for their sake and the legacy of Imi Lichtenfeld, their voice is heard.

Ski Vacations - What To Pack

If you will be traveling for a ski vacation, it is often difficult to know what to pack. You may not even have a problem knowing what to pack, but instead have a problem figuring how to get everything that you need from your home to your destination. Skis do not easily fit into suitcases, and if you are flying, this presents a huge problem.

Start by knowing what is available at your destination. Is there a rental shop? How much are the rental fees for skis, boots, and poles. If it is reasonable, and you don't mind skiing with rented equipment, this is a viable option - and it makes packing and traveling much easier.

If you don't care for rented equipment, there is another option. Find out if there are any ski shops in the area. There usually are. Get prices on skis, poles, and boots, and then ask if they buy used equipment. If they don't, ask if there is anyone near by that does purchase used equipment. Call that place to get an estimate on how much you could get for barely used ski equipment. Figure the difference in the money you will spend on the ski equipment, and the money you will get for the used equipment when you are finished with it. If it isn't much more than what it would cost you to rent the equipment, go for it!

Ski suits, ski jackets, and sweaters can be very bulky, and hard to pack. These items will take up a lot of room in your suitcase, and leave less room for other clothing and essentials. If you are trying to pack for a two week ski vacation, it will be impossible to fit everything you need into one suitcase.

There is a way to solve this. Call the lodge or resort where you will be staying. Tell them that you need to ship a package, for yourself, to them, and that you need that package to be there when you arrive. Ask them if they will hold it for you at the desk. In most cases, they will. Next, get a box, put all of your ski suits, your ski jacket, and any other bulky items in the box, and ship it to yourself, in care of the lodge or resort. Shipping can be overnight, two day, or three day depending on how far it must travel. Depending on how much the box weighs, you will usually pay less than fifty dollars to ship a package in the continental United States....which is a lot less than you would pay an airline for extra baggage!

Creating motion graphics is often the synergy of many different applications and skill sets. In addition to a good sense of design, an artist involved in modern motion graphics needs to have knowledge of four major areas: bitmap graphics, vector graphics, 3D graphics and compositing software.

Bitmap graphics, also referred to as pixel-based graphics, is probably the most common form and the most familiar to the laymen. In bitmap graphics, the images are composed of different colored dots (known as pixels) that together form an image. Bitmap images are typically photographs or real world images. Resolution of the image is dependent on how many pixels comprise the image. The more pixels in an image, the higher the resolution. As a result, the file size increases. Although there are several applications on the market that one can use to create and treat bitmap images, by far the most popular is Photoshop. Knowledge of Photoshop is integral to modern motion graphics.

The other form of graphics is vector, also known as resolution independent graphics. Vector graphics are lines, curves and shapes that the computer interprets through mathematical equations. Vector-based images are usually illustrations, logo designs or other comparatively simplistic compositions with potential complexities. Whereas bitmap graphics are composed of pixels and can become distorted if scaled too large, vector graphics have unlimited resolution. Because the information used to compose the graphics is all mathematics, the image can be the size of a building without losing resolution. Several vector graphics packages exist, the most common being Adobe Illustrator.

With the leaps in computing power in recent years, 3d graphics have become a more accessible and practical tool for motion graphics artists. The world of 3D graphics is immense and comprises many different disciplines from architectural rendering to major motion picture special effects; however, these applications can be used to solve design problems that only they can solve. Both bitmap and vector graphics are inherently flat, but a motion graphics artist can use a 3D software package to take these flat graphics into the third dimension. Many 3D programs, such as Maya, Lightwave or 3D Studio Max, are up to the task, Maxon's Cinema 4D's use of layers and hierarchies will be familiar to users of Adobe's programs. This program is simply more intuitive than its bigger and more complex rivals, making it a superior package for the motion graphics artist.

Last and probably most importantly is compositing. This is where all your flat graphics will come to life! Compositing software creates motion through the use of key frames and the program interpolates the in-betweens. A skilled motion graphics artist will use bitmap, vector and 3D graphics together to create attractive and effective animations. The most common consumer level compositing program is Adobe After Effects. In addition to their familiarity with the Adobe software, After Effects users also benefit from the ease of integration it offers with the bitmap and vector graphics of Photoshop and Illustrator, respectively.

A good motion graphics artist tries to accomplish one central idea: communicating effectively while retaining the viewer's attention. Today's audiences have a shorter attention span than ever, as well as a more refined and ever more savvy recognition of a good graphics treatment. A video that presents itself with lackluster or uninspired visual treatments is doomed to appear "behind the times" and lose credibility as a result. Knowledge of the four facets of motion graphics is indispensable and serves as the cornerstone of effective modern two-dimensional animation.
